3 piece fuel cap...

#1

Post by Hwheel72 »

For some reason the little screw just keeps on spinning without coming out. Im guessing it's seized in the inside piece? Should i use heat to get it loose? Any other thoughts? Thanks!

+1 on what Steve said. The cap traps the insert between the cap and sealing surface of the filler when it's tightened. If the screw still turns, the seal may be so dry that it can't get a grip. Adding a new seal on top of the old one might help it get a grip.

Alternatively, some clever folks that had this problem have fabricated clamps that would hold the insert so the screw could be removed.

I do as Steve and Chuck suggested first, then if that fails I have a tool made by a member here that I use. Here is a version of that tool offered for sale by another member

I'll try with another seal on top. That could help. Thanks

Yes, i did that first and it was spinning without any grabbing. Once i get the screw out, I'll torch it, remove what is leftover, and reseal. Hopefully I can get this 500 fired up and working after this!
