Deluxe Quicklite Lamp

#1

Post by Buckeyecamper »

I was at an auction today and bought this amazing lamp. It's a Coleman Deluxe Quicklite. My best find in the wild ever. The best part is that it was cheap. The electric cord and fixture is just draped over the shade holder so an easy fix. I haven't stopped smiling all day.

:cf_sign_greatpic: :cf_sign_yousuck: That's a once in a lifetime find for sure! To score a complete lamp with shade and vase is amazing. No holes drilled in anything. That's the way to electrify one! I'll save all your excellent pictures so that they'll be etched in my mind while I'm prowling antique stores for the next decade or so looking for pieces to complete mine.

Beautiful !
There was an option kit to electrify these in the beginning, I think even before they were marketed by Coleman.

Looks like they're similar enough Steve. Once the shape is right just tack it to the ring and cut off the excess.

I do. Just the lamp without a base or shade. I'm working on a totally incorrect vase and shade. It'll be so wrong it just might look right to somebody. Better than looking at it sitting there naked.

here is what im thinking about . one might be fine but two might be better . but still , doesnt look to easy :-) these are steel and would need to be hit from the inside n support the head on the outside to look best . so im still just in the thinking stage .

if i just push the arms in they dont touch flush and will need a bit of adjusting . looking at yours here i can kinda see some extra little bend on those arms of yours at the elbow ? subtle but i can see it . thinking thats how they got em to sit flush ?

here is my backwoods type MODIFICATION for the shade holder . took me an hour or two but looks pretty presentable to me ???? if only i could spot-weld that would been much faster !!! but my hopes was that my FIX looks PERIOD CORRECT for a repair , couldn't use hollow aluminum pop rivets and i just happened to have a few of these tiny size HAMMER IN steel rivets , they really pretty UN NOTICEABLE to the eye . the repair doesn't jump out at me ?

i have a pretty good BIG mess of tools on the back porch to clean up now for such a small job .

might try n find some gold fount paint today :-) my thoughts are to just use the gold paint with no primer over the brass . thats how i think coleman did it .........i dont like seeing grey primer if the paint gets a nick or chip . but may need to seal the wood handle first ?

someone commented on how nice i flattened the rivet , but that out side portion was already flat to start with , i whacked these from the inside , took like 3 whacks on each to get em how i like . it was not easy cuz you cant swing a hammer inside a shade holder so i had to get creative with my punch layed on its side , i whacked on the punch outside the shade holder but it crushed on the inside . pretty darn happy how this came out .

got a can of rustoleum gold spray paint for the fount but on the way home im not so happy with the color , its metallic ( they all were ) so sorta has a little sparkle to it . the fount is bare brass now and you practically see every finger print that has touched it , its tarnishing well LOL the paint is to prevent that .

but when i look at the pic of inside the VASE above it looks pretty close . its hard to match nearly 100 year old paint .

update > its drying , in the shade it looks real good , in the sun it has some sparkle .... i was im patient :-)

im afraid i may have to re do it , the paint doesnt seem to be fuel proof , i keep testing an experimental piece with coleman fuel on a rag and it starts coming off , have to let it really cure n re test ..... or might have to put a clear enamel over it in 48 hours , well see .

been thinking , David your gona prolly want some form of a gasket between the shade support n the shade . the originals had an asbestos gasket here . i was just thinking about some stove door gasket material like this , not to sure if it will form a circle without it crimping up .

this comes in black or white looks cheap enough to try ' its the right dimensions . just a few examples .

https://www.ebay.com/itm/384893015619?h ... SwGxVig03P

this is only 99 cents for fiberglass

https://www.ebay.com/itm/164828201936?h ... SwXrJgglmn

talked to Darcy a bit yesterday and she says its like a flat ring , 1/8 inch thick 5/8 inch wide .... so my mind has been all over the place trying to come up with something . in the old days it was asbestos , but im not apposed to a more modern approach with fiberglass of some sort . even some automotive flat gasket material i can cut myself ,,,,, so im looking for any ideas you folks might have as a suitable gasket material ????

Try some regular pink or yellow house insulation Steve. Cut out a piece that's bigger than what you need, get it soaking wet, squash it between a couple boards with some waxed paper to keep it from sticking. Let it dry and see if you can cut out the shape you need. I wet worked pink insulation soaked in DNA to line Super-cat stoves. Worked pretty good. Still pink, but who's going to see it.

I wonder how that wide stove door seal would form wet. That seems to be the trouble with all the good roll material. It's got to be formed in a ring.

Here's an idea Steve. Nomex. It'll scorch and turn to ash with direct flame, but not without an oxygen supply and more than 600°

USGI surplus stuff like this is yellow. You can probably find some to test.

OK i got brave n took apart the electric lamp , i was kinda nervous not knowing anything here , but it was pretty simple . saw a few parts i wasent sure about . so im curious Dave , does yours also have this nice machined metal ring that fits on top of the vase ? . without this ring its a rather rough casting . so i go get the fount and it fits the ring perfectly and drops right in :-) was pretty happy just seeing it get to this point ...... the bottom is rather ugly , like it needs felt !!! there is a steel foot that held up the electrical parts , all i have ever really seen are some complete lamps sitting up so this is all new to me diving into this , but its looking pretty rewarding :-)
