AGM 3927 packaging question (now with lots of pictures)

#1

Post by Hot_Diggity »

I found an unfired AGM 3927, with the paper still on the globe and the Servel 1944 Aladdin conversion. Both the pump and fuel cap with chain were taped down with a big X of black hockey tape, with a wrap of a narrower strip of the same tape pulling the tape tight around the pump shaft. This stuff was stiff with age and came off pretty much intact.
The trouble is that it left an adhesive mess on the paint. I know Coleman has done the tape thing to me on a couple new stoves.

Was this how they packed them from the factory, or was somebody being extra cautious while it was waiting to be put into service?

I'll get pictures up tonight. I just wondered about the tape. Did I just get lucky? :o

This one is all silver in the middle. Coleman style knob and disc, smallest burner cap I've ever seen.
Oh, and lots of steel.

Just curious, is the knob like the one in the pic below?

The vent is pretty cool. Looks just like a Coleman except for the triangular can opener holes punched in it.

I'm tempted to just leave it alone and leave the tape glue right where it is. Maybe experiment on the bottom where the glue goes over the US.

Pump, cap and most of the fittings are steel.

I saved all the nasty hardened tape and the brown paper wrap that was on the chimney. (I'm a lamp nut, so globe and chimney work interchangeably in my brain.)

Any ideas on what to try on the adhesive residue without damaging the paint? WD40 us about as gentle as I can imagine. My 3M adhesive remover from work doesn't damage modern paint, but I have no idea how it will work on this ancient stuff.

Or I just leave it alone. It has a story. What do you think?

Wow that is a really nice lantern Chuck! IDK.. I'd almost leave it as is.. Maybe try some hot water and Dawn soap and see what washes off?

Others are having great results with Dawn powerwash. I've not tried it myself.

Try WD40 on the adhesive. I know it is the best thing I've ever used to get fresh tape adhesive off of things. Spray it on a folded paper towel and rub gently. With adhesive that old and dry I'd try spraying it directly on the glue and letting it soak a few minutes before rubbing. Might need several applications.

I find that 91% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol works well to dissolve glues when Coleman fuel (lighter fluid) won't do it. However, being original outta the box, I'd be extra careful and test it on the bottom of the fount first.

VM&P naphtha is great for removing tape adhesive. What it would do to that paint is unknown to me.

Looks like the tape absorbed moisture over the years. That appears to be rust.

Hard to say yet Dan. I'll experiment on the bottom tonight and see how it goes. The tape that came off makes me think there's hope that the brown is the adhesive and what was bonded to the black cloth tape.

I'll keep ya'll posted. Fortunately I have all the solvents mentioned, and a few more gentle ones to try. ;)

Where I worked we would use ZEP gel orange degreaser to soften adhesives. It was amazing how quickly it worked. We at one time could order it directly in metal gallon cans but for the last 4 years or so it was only available in 5 gallon cans. We used a lot when redecaling machines for reuse. I don’t know if the non gel would work that is available at home centers, I made sure I got some of the gel before I retired.

This is the progress so far. Mostly WD-40 soak with nothing more abrasive than my fingertip to rub the adhesive off. I did try some Zippo lighter fluid, but it felt like it was making the paint tacky.

There's still a heavy accumulation of adhesive below the US that I will try some other solvents on.

Lots and lots of patience seems to be the most important part.
