Way, Way Ot and totally not even relevant--Your perfume stinks!

#1

Post by Gunhippie »

I just got driven off the outdoor porch of the pub by a bunch of gals wearing perfume. Before it really registered what I was experiencing, I was having a major allergy-like attack. I ran.

I can't smoke where I can even be seen. What's the difference? Why do people do this? How bad do they smell to begin with?

Now, back to your regular programming.

I don't know how many people I work with that I can identify by their cologne as soon as they come through the door. And then there is the young guys and their bodyspray 🤮

Yeah, and the A refused to run. Always gotta be a couple of non-conformists in the bunch ;)

I'm not particularly allergic to much of anything, but my nose was running like a kitchen faucet and my eyes weren't far behind. It takes a lot to drive me away from the pub.

I used to change floors at the mall to avoid Macy's "Perfume Hell" so I feel for you Timm! It would close down my breathing! A light sent, fine; the ones with "Range and Striking power"? Nope!

I don't miss the Mall at ALL!

Some types of perfumes/colognes can trigger a significant histamine response for some individuals. It can range from mild to severe asthma like reaction.

So putting on a bit to much of can cause a bit of medical emergency for some.

Spoils a relaxing evening a the pub.

Bugs the beejeezus outta my wife, every time she puts on some foo foo juice I make the ‘that stinks’ face. She says I have an overactive sense of smell and I have to agree. I really do have a dislike for strong perfume, it gives me a headache.

The worst is patchouli oil. I still remember restaurants and bars over in the Willamette valley with "No Patchouli Oil" signs at the door.

We've had to send wait staff home for a change and shower due to showing up smelling like... I don't know, but most perfume to me smells like nasty solvents, just worse.

Yeah the neighbors use some kind of patchouli in their dryer, and the exhaust is on our side of their house. That smell covers our entire yard.

There is a scientific reason that some folks douse themselves with very strong perfume and don’t seem to be aware of how potent it is. They habituate to the smell as their olfactory neurons become desensitized to the chemical odorants.

And it’s not just perfume. Ever walked into a house with a bunch of really stinky candles burning. Or a house with a bunch of those little plug in devices that throw out a huge amount of some horrid smell.

SWMBO bought a couple of those plug in things - I unplugged them and taped over them, after a coupe years they finally got tossed.

Same deal with those bloody car fresheners. She put one in and I threw it away.

Yet let her catch a whiff of skunk and its "CLOSE THE WINDOWS!" even if its just a hint. As long as its not overpowering I'd rather smell the skunk... (And funnily enough skunk scent is the base for some perfumes?

That's my reaction. My discomfort is obvious enough that the ladies I work with have been watching out for me for years and
made my life much more comfortable.

That Woman, (the one I married 34 years ago) had Covid back in July. Now she says all soaps and perfumes smell like cat food to her. This from a woman that made me find somewhere else to wash my clothes because of her strong smelling perfumed fabric softeners.

A little payback for me. 8-)

I do appreciate the shops that have aroma therapy going the moment you walk in, like eucalyptus, or some other earthy aromatic.

It is a terrific olfactory signal that there is not one single POS in that store I would want and immediately do a 180.

I quit smoking cigarettes many years ago but for some reason I don’t mind the occasional whiff 🤷‍♂️. Contracted Covid last Christmas and while my smell has 99% recovered I can no longer smell bleach, at all. The strangest thing is I have developed a bizarre, nearly bloodhound level sensitivity to certain polypropylene plastics and the smell transfers to my hands and takes all day to dissipate. It smells awful.

Oh yes, I have been assaulted by people like that. We had one who would walk by the shop door and it was awful at the other end 80 feet away. Emily Post rules state that one's perfume shouldn't be noticeable more than an arms distance away. The worst at work is scented hand lotion. The drivers use this stuff and it melts into the steering wheel and stinks up you hands 5 hours after they are gone. YUK. And the wheel is slimy. I will admit to having a load of fun at work with a can of fart spray. A couple of the drivers are great fun and it does go both ways. E.

How about hand sanitizer stations? How nasty are some of the fragrances you’ve run across?

You guys are lucky you can smell! I lost 95% of my smell capabilities. Some treatment took it from me. It’s got to be really strong for me to smell it and sometimes then I can’t identify it. Flowers have no smell. Food either. It has affected taste too since they are connected.

The only thing worse than a co-workers perfume overdose, is when someone thinks it helpful to sprinkle some cinnamon, or other spice in the coffee grounds for the communal coffee pot, so everyone can enjoy a surprise version of what they think is coffee!

Seen more than one mouthful get spit out in the sink early at work, with an irritated, "WTF!"

We got a batch of "hand sanitizer" back in the beginning of all this. It was basically "first runnings" from a distillery. These are also referred to as "fusel oils", and can make you incredibly sick or kill you if you drink them (Fusel oils were most often the poison in bad moonshine). As soon as I put some of that foul liquid on my hands, I could taste it and started feeling bad. Never touched it since.

I get the same problem with certain perfumes. Tight breathing and the inside of my nose irritated.
A couple of the older ladies from church years ago apparently couldn't smell a thing, and came in doused with some dime store Jean-Nate' stuff on. Talk about bear spray. I know why it says "Eau de toilette" on the old bottles; 'Cause that's where it belongs. In the toilet!

I'm usually turned off by the smell of most perfumes and 'air fresheners'.
It is said somewhere that a person usually chooses to wear a perfume that resembles his or her natural scent and effectively amplifies it.
For me, I seem to like the smell of kerosene on my body.

My wife used to use an overpoweringly scented hand lotion that I couldn't tolerate when used in the car. I can never understand why a hand lotion has to smell so strongly. I clipped this way back when:
