Just fettling my first 202. Is it normal for their to be a tiny mesh 'cap' over the packing that the cleaner tip would poke through?

Yes, it's there to ensure you destroy your pricker wire when rebuilding a generator, and to ensure that you regret not tossing it before re-installing the cleaning/pricker rod.

Due to budgetary constraints the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.

X2 I must have destroyed 3 or 4 wires before I started checking for those darn things and tossing them
