The layer 288s without a burner cage have metal E-blocks. The 288s with a burner cage had a plastic E-block and no heat shield. Coleman took a "belt and suspenders" approach by making the E- block metal and adding the heat shield.

Yours is safe with the heat shield in place.

288 founts are like that as the 286 valve sits closer to the edge of the fount and not centered like the 288.

The 200B is a desirable lantern. It is basically a make over on a Model 286. Uses a 288/286 generator.

You have it right! Now you can adjust the width and length by squeezing the sides to fit what will go on it. The two pieces extending out from the back are to support older style stoves where the lid folds all the way down. Of course, Thank you. If I put a stove on it I would of probably seen that....

I have several of these. They will keep you warm sitting at your repair table in an unheated shed it the winter. Are they cool? No, but they do look awesome when first lit and the flame "dances" as you hold the knob to the "Light" position.
