My neighbor bought this at an antique mart and the pics are self explanatory but the thing that has me stumped is the date on the fount. I’m positive that it say 1- 83. I also tried a magnet and it stuck to the fount. Somebody pulling a fast one(stripped steel tank)? Plus the rust seems odd. I told him I would get to the bottom of this. Thanks a bunch guys. I appreciate it. I would say it's a 639A with the paint stripped .

Thanks Ernie. I should have done a search before I posted this. Plenty of info there. I’ll delete this. Thanks again.

No worries Dave ...would be a nice candidate for a repaint and you'd have a nice looking lantern !

Unfortunately I don’t think I will be able to talk my neighbor out of it. I offered 30 as soon as I saw it. He paid 23. And I didn’t know that at the time. If I’d had kept my big trap shut I may have gotten it.  But as soon as I told him it would burn kero he said he wants to put citronella in it and burn it around the patio. UGH!! And he doesn’t even collect😳

Don't know much about the 639 or Canuck lanterns but that almost looks like chrome...

Hi Toby. I did some research and they did make a Green model. I think Coleman started manufacturing them in the early 70’s. But I can’t see any remnants of paint anywhere.  The fount does shine up a little. I haven't put a lot of time into it just yet. If it would happen to end up in my possession then I would really tear into it. Probably would do a repaint as Ernie suggested.

The nickel 635 and 639 from the 70s were nickel plated steel and tend to rust under the nickel.

I also think that one is green a 639 with the paint stripped off.

My green CPR 639 is dated around the same time.

Thanks Shane. I tried the magnet test and it pulled it in. I tried it on my 237 and got nothing. So I’m thinking the same thing. Whoever stripped got it all.

Dave, maybe he won't mix the citronella oil right with kero; maybe he'll even try burning straight citronella oil (you could even "inadvertently" make bad suggestions ðŸ˜‰.) Then, when he gets frustrated because it doesn't work right, just walk over with some money, and Bob's your uncle.

Pretty sure a late one like that would have a large or multiple decals covering the paint on the fount. I’m assuming multi language lighting instructions, English and French,

I frighten easily!

My current shade is Coleman!!

To me a lamp without a shade is creepy!

Steve. That’s what I’m kind of hoping for🙄. I went ahead and shined it up the best I could. And yes. I do believe he wants to burn straight citronella.                              Kevin. What I’m gathering is that it was definitely a Green fount and someone stripped it? When I first saw it I thought Nickel. I didn’t think they plated founts that late.

Well. After some further research using this forum(which btw is one of the easiest search engines to use, thanks moderators) this lantern I believe is a Nickel plated steel. If I’m wrong, please point it out.  I will continue my research. Thanks guys for your insight. It’s much appreciated.

Im not a date expert but i would check for any green paint in the pump hole and the air stem, even when stripped the paint seemed to stick in these areas.

Same here. We tried citronella candles for no-see-ums once, and it seemed to attract about ten times as many as without the candles! Besides, I loathe the stink of that stuff.
It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.

Thanks for the info guys. Fortunately the 639 is in my possession😎. My neighbor gave it to me in exchange for some labor helping him build a dog kennel. So no citronella will be burned!! He’s building a garage now and said I could have his 413G stove also. He bought it the same time he bought the lantern. Win win for me😁.

PS-- To be sure whether it's stripped or plated do a scrape test. Scrape an inconspicuous part where there's rust, if you get shiny glittery flakes of metal you have a plated fount. Stripped, you'll only get brown rust.

.                                    Sorry Kevin. Yes it does have multi language lighting instructions. You folks talk of a letter following the model #. This one is just a 639. No letter. Thanks.
