Had my first pump tube pinhole this morning. From inside the fount no less. This transitional E appeared to be barely used... And looks like it will stay that way. Very small rust on the bottom inside fount. But must of had a chunk flake off the pump tube as I finally found my source of pressure loss. Think I'm about 50/50 on my last ten Founts being either cracked or pinholed... Bummer IMG_20200617_103743_copy_600x800.jpg

Sad!!  Was it a factory flaw or something?

I'm assuming not, as it had some use but very little. I'm guessing there was some rust on the side of the pump tube I cannot see. Strange as there was very little in the bottom of the fount where I expected it to be. Probably the humid Missouri summers we have. Looking through the pump side of the tube it's spotless, like looking into a hydraulic cylinder. Lantern appears to have always been stored in the guillotine case it came in. Definitely not the one I expected to have trouble with. Oh well, have some nice parts now😁

If it's a pinhole or slight crack, and not too high up on the tube, I'd try Caswells on it. It worked for me on two lanterns by tipping the fount far enough to slosh the Caswells up onto the tube.

I might try that if it was something uncommon or hard to get. But being a common E I think I'll just settle for parts ðŸ˜

I pulled a pump tube and repaired a crack on an L227 but I don’t think I would spend that much time on a 22XE.

I have a 1964 220F with a pin hole in the solder end at the check valve. Nice lantern. May have to try to fix.

Let it burn....

I hate holey founts, it always seems to be on one that looks really good. But...I know where you can get a replacement!

You pull it on the E so that when ( hopefully never) you find one like it on "Something of Value" you have experience.

I appreciate that Doug. We'll see, just finished my third 22xE this week... Think I'm done with this style for awhile again ðŸ˜„

Never tried to fix a pump tube.  I like E's, but I have quite a few. There are a lot of them out there so it shouldn't be to hard to find a replacement fount.

Fill the pump tube up with some epoxy & put a amish fuel cap on it......use external pump.......or like you said....part it out

Well, I wasn't going to fix this thing and just use it for parts, but took a trip to Doug's this past weekend @Sam McCord and he just so happened he had the fount I needed in his parts bin. I had the rest of the parts ready to go so I bought it home. Well this one was no piece of cake either. The air tube that runs to the top of the fount was plugged solid on this one. Ended up having to go through the filler and valve hole to bend it over where I could drill it out... Geez... Is it worth it? Oh well now we're up and running. Thanks for the parts Doug. 00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200623085500061_COVER_copy_600x800.jpg

Absolutely worth fixing it! You did a good job on it too. The transitional E's are my favorite 220/228 lanterns. Good show!

After rebuilding a 220 like that, you're qualified to work on any lantern.  Heck, if you get bored, you can apply to NASA to work on the space shuttle, but upon seeing that you went through a 220, they may consider you overqualified.

In case it's not obvious, I personally despise working on 220's.  🙂

You did do a fine job on that one.  It's looking great.

I wish I would've kept track of how many of these old 220/228s I've FFR'd the past 8-9 months. The first couple were a learning experience but once a guy is setup it's pretty simple I think... Unless you have to do it twice ðŸ˜œ
