Kansas John

This slant showed up in my mail today.  I fired it up on the stinky fuel that came in it. I think this is the first lantern that had fired mantles even partially survive the postal system.

Anyway, I figured I’d clean it up a little before I decided to keep it or move down the road.  The pick-up tube is different than my other slants. I seem to recall them only have one tube and a mesh thingy at the bottom part.  Am I mad or is my memory slipping that far?

Its cleaning up nicely so far, but I’m afraid it’s never going to have a mirror finish again.

sorry for the crooked images and poor lighting, I originally took the pictures for texting, not posting.  My work bench is in the darkest corner of the garage.  I plan to remedy that in a few weeks.

Slant pickups are all weird. But that's not the answer...
That one there is the earlier version. Operating principle is the same, but instead of a tube inside another they are side by side. Still has air going down, picking up fuel through the jet at the bottom, and going up until the back pressure from the generator floods it.

Thanks!  So should I expect it to operate more poorly than my other slants?  Is it prone to flooding/overfueling?

My others pulse unless the fount is over half full.

Well, it’s back together and working like a slant!  It’s been burning since 5pm or so and it only started pulsing about an hour ago.  I must be below half a fount now.

I need to scrub the mica a little better.  There are no holes and only a small spot of de-lamination on one of the panels. Click image for larger version - Name: 4CD3CE8A-34CE-49AB-A083-F3019D786FFB.jpeg, Views: 32, Size: 91.04 KB

Thanks for sharing the weirdness, John, that's new to me.
WillCat, thanks for educating us about the weirdness; I learned something today. (Something useful! I learned things at work today that were painful.)
