Sierra Roadrunner
I've camped at a handful of developed campgrounds in the area but mostly a lot of dispersed/remote camping over the years. It's where I first lit up a Coleman Lantern, cooked on a Coleman Stove and caught my first Rainbow Trout.
I've still got that stove and lantern, and a lot more camping gear, but the campsites are mostly all gone now due to The Creek Fire on the Sierra National Forest. Some of you may have heard about it or saw the news and videos on TV over the past few days.

It started early Friday night near Shaver Lake north east of Fresno, CA. Saturday night they were evacuating 163 trapped campers, some with injuries, by National Guard Helicopters from Mammoth Pool Reservoir as the fire spread to over 36,000 acres.
By Sunday night they had airlifted an additional 50+ people from the area as the fire increased to over 73,000 acres. Officials have called for more mandatory evacuations of surrounding communities in addition to issuing evacuation warnings for other outlying towns.

The area has a rich historical past involving Native Americans, Logging Camps, Cattlemen, Sheepherders, Miners and Forest Rangers. Now a new chapter is unfolding concerning the history Sierra Nevada Mountains. I know a family that built a general store/ cafe and operated a private campground since the mid 1950's. They lost it all Saturday night. They are not alone as I'm sure there are many more people who have lost homes, cabins and businesses during this conflagration but officials have not posted any loses yet.

The Creek Fire, at this time with 0% containment, only promises to get worse over the next few days as the weather changes with stronger wind speeds and more erratic wind direction in the forecast. More than 800 personnel are battling the fire against seemingly impossible odds. To the Firefighters, you have my sincerest thanks and to everyone effected by this fire you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I’ve camped up in that area many times.  Mostly around Nelder Grove. Part of Nelder burnt up a couple of years ago but the main grove (giant Sequoias)  was saved.  Now in harms way.  Seems most of California has burnt up last few years.

So, which was it? Surely that's more important than ten thousand acres of forest... /s
I seriously hope all our members out there are staying safe though. Houses can be rebuilt, people not so much.

Please don't insult maroons!

I like my maroon.
It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.

They haven't said how this Creek Fire started in the Sierra National Forest that's in central California north east of Fresno. The gender reveal party started the El Dorado Fire near Yucaipa/Oak Glen which is in southern California.

The tree mortality rate, due to drought and bark beetle infestation, is a major cause of the rapid rate of spread on the Creek Fire. It's been a long time coming for that area. I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner. This is a heads up for other areas in California, the Pacific Northwest and other forested areas of the western U.S. It's just a matter of time and where before big fires like this strike again. What's the saying? "Too little, to late?"

@Marty- The Sky Ranch Road area, Nelder Grove, Fish Camp and Wawona are now all part of an evacuation warning. This fire continues to burn with 0% containment and could get a lot worse real quick. Hope everyone stays safe! If they say evacuate, EVACUATE!  You can always rebuild.

Much of Eastern and central Washington is now under class 2 and 3 evacuation orders.

It'll be here soon. Not excited about this.

It makes me nervous that my property is surrounded by brush 3-4' tall. I keep my place mowed and all the brush down but these are undeveloped properties.
Not much to do but pray. Last night was smokey and raining ash while I was taking my dog for her evening walk. Had two small local fire last night.

I guess I’m too old to get it.  Seems the kids these days have to make a huge deal out of everything, well this gender reveal became a huge deal didn’t it?

If I owned a place like that I'd have a set of "drip mist" heads to dampen the structure and the grounds.  and leave it on in case of evacuation.

A buddies MIL house was in the middle of the Oakland hills fires that claimed ~3K homes.  She thankfully was visiting him that weekend.  A neighbor who knew she was not home stuck her sprinkler on top of the house, and turned it on before evacuating.  Her house (and probably his) were the only surviving houses on the street.  Houses on either side and behind her were gone.

I'm guessing this house was similar:

ps: DON"T get the "spinner" type - bugs and spiders make nests and they get jammed.  You want something like this:

Unbelievable. Seeing pictures like you all have posted are incredible. I hope everyone stays safe. Prayers going out to all that are threatened by these fires. I love my Old lanterns. They are Old school, Old fashioned, opposite of new Old, cool Old, not being able to made new other than a good fettle Old. And just plain Old. Gender reveal?? Why do they have to change things to make it modern? I don’t get it at all. Sorry for the small rant.

In three threads about the west coast fires, several posts have had to be removed because a few members want to use the threads to make political statements. Some of the same few members jump on each thread to express their disdain over some issue, enough of this please. In particular, you may not like one state or another, but many members live in every state in the USA. I hope we can keep these threads on track from now on.

Thanks, Ed, as mod

Jane and I live in Reno NV, a few weeks ago we watched part of Loyalton fire come to a mile from our own house, just North of us it had jumped Hwy 395. I really hope those people affected are doing ok, the fire here looked like it had a ten mile front, I haven't checked but it could have been longer. We know people near the Stead area who lost homes. Monday Jane and I drove up 395, one thing that surprised me was how many Ranch homes and barns had been saved, the full area around them burnt to a crisp, thank you, thank you, all of you fire fighters and pilots and ground crews.
