I recently purchased at auction a nice Coleman gas lamp.  Stamped on the side of fount with the Quick-Lite logo is 1-4.  Stamped on bottom of fount is "3 - 0, CQ, 104".  Is this a manufacturer mistake or was the bottom replaced?  If it was replaced, it was very well  done.

The 1 4 should indicate April 1931.  The month and year on the bottom are obviously backwards, as there is no month 0, so it's got to be March 1930.  Almost a year difference, interesting!

That said, I have heard of folks replacing fount bottoms, but those stories are few and far between, and rarely with a period/model correct replacement. IT is my understanding that the bottoms and sides are stamped individually as those pieces are produced, not on the finished product, so the most likely scenario is that bottom plate got "misplaced" at some point but got found closer to 1931 when the top of the fount was made, then they were mated.

Interesting piece.  Carlton's got what I think would have happened.  Shine it up and put a shade on it!

Coleman made about 3 million CQ lamps so there could be more oddities out there.

Thank you fo your replys.  This is the way the lamp came from the estate auction.  I had not looked at the bottom until I got home with it.  I live near Wichita KS and will take it to the Coleman Museum to get their take on it. Coleman 2 dates.jpg

Spike, to save you a trip to Wichita with the lamp, The Coleman Muesuem no longer exists. The outlet store has been moved to Maize Rd and there is no repair center any longer either. To tell you the truth, even if the Coleman museum was still open, they don't know anything about the pieces they have. Ever since Herb Ebendorf passed away, there was no one that kept track of anything nor cared. This forum is going to be the best place to get your information. On a second note, you missed out on a 4 day Coleman gathering just last weekend at Wellington Lake. There will be another in October at Wilson Lake. The shade on your lamp is a Aladdin shade but it should work.

I went to the Coleman Museum address and it was gone!  Googled it and learned that the Coleman Factory Store and Museum closed in November 2018.  They moved the Factory Store to a new location in Wichita but put the museum in storage with no immediate plans to open it.  I talked to an employee about my Two Date Lamp; he said the manufactured date would most likely be the date stamped on the bottom.  But the bottom date is almost a year earlier than the side date.  ??

[sEm_ImSorry]This is American History. I don't understand why the company closes and puts there items in storage.

Thanks, Colemannut, but I didn't read your post in time.  I was going to Wichita anyway.  I am more of a picker than a collector but I do seem to be accumulating more Colemans than I would like to keep.  I may list this lamp on eBay and see what others think of it.
