I have a few Tilley R55's around here and would like to convert one with the lantern head conversion they used to sell. I've checked Juliands and The Fettle Box and I don't see any. Does anybody know if these are still available? Thanks, John

Do some searching on UK bay, can't recall the seller name, carries many Tilley items.  Best source.

I don't know enough about Tilley's to know if this site will help.

Here's a conversion kit there, but I don't know whether it's what you want.

Pretty sure someone posted here in the past few months that you could use one of the smaller Tilley lanterns on that heater.

Chuck, I kinda remember reading something here about the conversion too. It would make a cool frankie. I might get an R55 running and see where it leads. I've got a couple of Tilley 246's but I don't really want to part one out. Maybe some Coleman uppers could be mated to it.

Hey John, maybe you wouldn't have to part one out. Correct me if I'm wrong but - can't you just pull the upper part of the lantern, the vented base plate, globe cage, burner, and vent somehow?

I only have one Tillery lantern, AL-620 and my guess is one like that would work since it just lifts off.

You are absolutely right @Chucker  heads can be swapped but only a few will hold their globe with them and not in the frame.

Hi John, You would need to get hold of either a Tilley CH1 conversion head, or Tilley table lamp burner/gallery head to turn it into a lamp.

This link here https://www.colemancollectorsforum.com/post/tilley-ch1-6964020?pid=1283355362&highlight=tilley+ch1 shows the CH1 head that Tilley made to convert the Tilley R1, and R55, radiators to lamps. Actually it may be easier to get hold of one of these in the USA, as they seem to turn up in north America quite often. Tilley importers like A.W. Thacker imported these lamp conversion heads into the USA, along with those radiators, to give them a lamp conversion option.
The  lamp heads are no longer made, but there are reproductions of both those head types on ebay, though certainly not cheap. The vent or hood of the CH1 is different to most of the normal Tilley lamp and lantern hoods, but there are repoductions on ebay.

You can't use the radiator burners from the R1 or R55 with those lamp heads. They have a tilley X246 lamp type burner, which is quite different. Both of those lamp heads will need a Tilley #182 globe (onion shaped).
Here is a picture of the Tilley table lamp burner/gallery head you could use instead of the CH1 head, as a lamp conversion.

Thanks Keith. If anyone knew this off the top of their head, it was you.

Chuck, I think you're right about some Tilley uppers just lifting off complete. I don't know if the X246 is one or not.  Pancholoco, do you have any pics of the parts you are using? It sounds like a fun project.

Almost all Tilley lamp and lantern burners, gallerys, and hoods (uppers) just lift off the vapouriser.
