I have a few rotary dimmer switches. Off is  CCW, on is CW.... or some are push on/off and dim is CCW.  So a toggle switch may follow the same orientation if installed horizontally.

So Timm, if you have a 3 way push button switch, should the top button pushed be on or off?  And what if you mounted it sideways?

I'm talking a truly mind-boggling question here!

When mounting duplex light switches vertically in a single-gang box, do they turn off to the the right or left?

I need answers NOW!

Rereading this.  I ASSUMED you were using a modern Decora style duplex rocker.  Are these rocker or toggles?   Is t there a label on the mounting tabs that mount switch to the SG box?

Look at the spelling on the switch.  If it only has a dot to indicate on ..your choice .Most times the power wire goes on the right

I’ve been wiring up a lot of these duplex and triplex switches the last few months.  The lutron decora duplex rockers have feed on the right when looking at front of switch, and the triplex switches have feed on the left.   Who would have thought?

I look at it like this:
Left - off, as in the left are off in the head.
Right - on, as in Right On!  Hey what can I say.
