So my camping rig being the camper shell / bed of my truck, I have somewhat limited space to carry gear, I mean I do, but I don't if that makes sense...

Anyway, I have both a Coleman Folding camp oven, and a 12" Deep Dutch cast iron dutch oven (8qt) which every time I type that my brain says too big! But I digress...

The Coleman oven has been fitted with a baking stone in the bottom, and an insulator made from a welding blanket to even out, and retain heat / make it more efficient / use less gas... It packs up, but with everything needed to make it effective, it packs up not much smaller than the Dutch Oven...

So my question is, if you had both, and had to chose one to take on your camping trips, which one would you chose, and why?

I have both oven and many dutch ovens, if you cook with dutch oven you have to bring charcoal or collect firewood and with coleman oven i feel it is less work, just my take on that

Very true. However, and just trying to take everything into consideration here, the DO is a much higher capacity cooker, and does a lot more. How often am I going to need the does a lot more and the higher capacity since it is just my wife and I most of the time...

Between the two, I'd go for the Coleman oven.  If you also want a Dutch oven and it doesn't have to be so huge, I just looked on Walmart's site and you can get a 1 quart one for $15 or a 2 quart one for $20 shipped to the store.

A DO does things a stove admires. Chili, stew, roasts, frying, bean soup they just are a part of camp cooking. Then fold up that oven and slide it in somewhere.

I used my coleman oven on the last campout to bake biscuits, chicken breast, potstoes and sweetrolls. It came out good but dutch oven in my opinion cooks the best just takes a little more prep

Is your Coleman oven modded for better heat control? My big issue is of course the Coleman is easier / less fuss to use, the Dutch Oven, yeah, it just cooks better, even with the Coleman modded... Plus it has MUCH higher capacity, and more function...

I may be answering my own question which is find an alternative stowage space for the Coleman and take both. I found out last night that it will fit, in the box, under the passenger seat of our '06 Malibu. 

Some background. I have an '04 F150 Supercab 5.4L 4x4. If you know anything about the 3v Ford Triton 5.4L you will know I have engine problems. I have a local guy that does a lot of fleet truck work that does "bulletproofing" of these engines and is going trhough them. Once done we will be using the truck again...

The truck has a high top camper shell, a Leer 122 that gives me approximately 50' interior height. I use a platform bed with 2 large slide out drawers underneath.  The bed is right at the bed rails of the truck. 

With the storage the truck offers, this isn't an issue, but in the mean time, the Malibu is a much harder vehicle to use for camping trips...

I would have to go with the dutch oven(w/ legs). Can cook everything in just that, oven just bakes. But if I was camping out of a Malibu, I might not bring either. Keep it simple until you get the truck back. 501 stove and a frying pan will keep you well feed.

Just how long are your camping trips going to be? If it is just you and maybe one other, I'd leave that big stuff at the house. Back in the day I used to do ~2 week road trips around the country (one was ~8,175 miles, 454 gallons of gasoline) in my pickup with a camper shell. All you probably need is a 502 stove, a lantern (piezo light Coleman propane is simple, quick, and handy), one of the Walmart folding handle camping fry pans, and a medium sized cooler to keep things cold. In my case, cooking was out as it chewed into valuable travel time.

If I could get away with heat and eat meals with my wife, I'd use my Exponent F1 ultralight... 

I have a Coleman folding handle skillet.... it's my one Coleman item i despise. Everything sticks and burns...

 Since my father-in-law passed away and my wife and I are without kids we like camping during the big holidays.   Typically we will go on Wednesday a right before Thanksgiving and come back Monday. I'm looking for a way to basically roast a Turkey breast not the whole thing just the breast then may be a leg. I know a small one can be done in about travel but I also think it can be done in the coalmine camp oven.

 A lot of things can be baked in the coals of a camp fires with foil unfortunately a lot of things can't, at least not well.

 Trust me it would be a lot easier on me and a lot easier to pack if my wife wasn't quite so finicky.

Dutch oven for me, but I seem to be in the minority.  If you have a pick-up truck bed to fill, I would think you have plenty of room for anything that yo could possibly need.

You'd think, however 2 points to consider.

#1. The truck is only a 6.5 foot bed model, not an 8' bed. That extra 18" is a HUGE deal.
#2. I am capacity constrained by the fact everything must stay under the sleeping platform for safety sake. 

As I have mentioned, much of the gear selection is because my wife. I love her to pieces, but she was not raised with the concept of multi purpose and minimalism.  We also have some space suckers that are there for health reasons. Most notably, a generator, gas can, and CPAP machine. The best way to consider the gear selection and camp setup is an RVless attempt at RV camping. 

Soft gear to a limited extent can be stowed on top of the bed, like the DAC Full Size Truck Cap / SUV tent. And of course bedding, like my Coleman King Size sleeping bag(s), pillows etc...

I have to either pare down, or squeeze in the following in the cap and under the bed. These include things such as.

Coleman Pack Away camp kitchen.\
Coleman Dual Fuel lanterns (2)
Coleman 424 Dual fuel 2 burner stove.
Harbor Freight Tailgator 900w peak 2 stroke generator.
1 gallon gas can, and quart of 2 stroke oil.
4 @7 gallon Aqua Tainers.
2 @ 5 gallon collapsible water carrier (gray water collection.
EZ Up Pagoda 13x13 canopy with sand bag leg weights. 
Jaxpety 5 gallon / 20L portable toilet
Home brewed heat exchanger / Zodi battery shower. Stove top water heater.
Cabelas Shower shelter
2 @Quick Shade / Quick Chairs.
On and on and on... 

Now admittedly, I could use smaller, lighter equipment, which I have, my hiking pack with tent weighs in at less than 10lbs without food / water. However I am trying to accomodate my wife here...

After starting this thread, I had a bit of an epiphany. I happen to own a hitch haul that I can easily, and inexpensively build a lockable fiberglass gear box for it. If I move the following gear to the hitch haul, the chances of contaimination, and room in the bed for gear would be fixed.

#1. Generator.
#2. Not previously listed, but for hot weather camping, 5K BTU Window unit AC, and support. This boots into the side of the DAC tent and will turn the sleeping area into an icebox. Great for sleeping during the HOT HUMID Texas summers. Summer here lasts until literally Halloween... 
#3. For travel north / cold weather camping, Coleman 5K BTU catalytic heater. Actually want to find a smaller one, like a 3K unit. 5K is still a bit much in the truck cap.
#4. Gas can, 5 gallon regular unleaded, and 1 gallon 2 stroke.
#5. Portable Toilet.

No doubt.

The overwhelming majority of what I "need" camping wise is driven by my wife. You see she would MUCH rather be in a hotel on the beach, than in a tent or under a truck cap on the beach. I personally would MUCH rather be on the beach in a tent, or in that truck cap. There are some health issues that have driven certain equipment requirements though. Most notably 2 pieces of gear. My Harbor Freight Tailgator generator, and my Everstart jumper pack. I use the HF Generator to charge the Everstart jumper pack.

If I chose foods that can be either reconstituted via boiling water I.E. backpacking foods, OR can be cooked over a camp fire either on a campfire fork, or a pie iron, I radically simplify my kit. Kitchen at that point boils down to Coleman Exponent F1 Ultralight stove, 1.5L Titanium cook pot, Coleman Extendible Campfire Fork, GSI Outdoors Ultralight Java Drip, Coghlans pie iron, scotch brite pad, dish rag, and towel, and camp suds. 

Sleep system would boil down to a box frame bed in the truck, with a walmart twin mattress. Cooling is still via AC in the hottest / most humid parts of summer, sorry it is coastal Texas, but that is easy enough. 

Basically everything not set up would fit in the cab of the truck no problem...

My wife however wants all the fancies, wants to be able to prep big fancy dinners to impress her siblings on family trips,. she absolutely won't use the Luggable Loo so it had to be a flushable portable toilet since pit toilets grossed her out, and if I am being completely honest, I am not exactly a fan of them either...

This whole thread / discussion has gotten me into a new paring down mode. My wife has gone off the deep end on what we "need" to take camping. After some discussion last night, and a review of what we actually use, she did agree, a lot of th ekitchen stuff she insists on is excessive for just the 2 of us on a long weekend camping. 

As I mentioned in another thread, one of the long term projects I want to do is build a proper lightweight fiberglass over foam camper for the truck. By designing in / on a canopy, I can leave out the EZ Up. By designing multi use space in the camper, I can eliminate the privy tent, I have already eliniated the measuring cups / spoons in favor of pre measured and bagged / containerized ingredients. A bit more prep on the backend, but in camp, it should be dump and go cooking which is a LOT better than sucking up precious little in camp time. 

Since we decided to optimize in camp time, we also know that in a group, is about the only time dutch oven cooking makes sense for us.  So that stays at home. The Coleman would be a better fit as far as the use we are doing goes. In camp we typically do things like pizza, or biscuits, and I can do them in the folding oven. My big thing is going to be things like roastes, chickens etc... and again, just the 2 of us doesn't make sense. Just put a split breast and a leg on the mini sheet and roast it with the Coleman, or foil wrap it and do it on the campfire...

I've seen methods for doing pizza on a skillet, and we have a really nice Ozark Trail (that has been well seasoned and smoothed) 12" skillet. I am going to do that one at home before trusting it in camp... And of course try the low carb tortilla pizza route.
