I was woken up around 3 AM by a 4.6 earthquake last night. No damage. The thing that woke me up was the sound of my bedroom window shaking (which is above my head), not the actual shaking motion itself. We live near a small dairy farm and I could hear all of the cows mooing after is finished.

Yikes!  I've slept through one, was on a BART train for the second.  Ironically, the only one I felt was my third  and it was way after I left CA for Washington DC.  I felt the Virginia quake that damaged the National Cathedral.  First thing I did was go home and check the water heater!  I guess the California time paid off.

I remember that we had a small earth movement here along the Mississippi years ago.  It was weird, a side to side shaking.  No damage fortunately.  I have relatives in CA, I hope there are no more large quakes!

I always feel better knowing that we are far from earthquake sources. Then I look outside to the south, at that spectacular, steep escarpment of the Wallowa mountains, and recall that that is one end of the Olympic/Wallowa lineament, a giant fault system that spans most of the NW from the Olympic mts, through south-central WA to here and on a little ways into Idaho! Maybe I shouldn't be so smug, after all. Fortunately, in my area at least, this fault seems to be in fairly constant motion with no snags or hitches. We have a few hundred very tiny quakes a year, far below where you can feel them, but they relieve pressure on the fault system. Or so we like to believe.
It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.

Got a text this morning from my daughter who lives not far from the epicenter.  The quake woke her up.

Jeez! The local news in Seattle sure can make a small quake into a major catastrophe. 15 minutes of "earthquake" news on one station.

They interviewed people who said they didn't feel the quake. OMG, then they took live calls from viewers who slept through it.[funny]

got to love the news.   They report “news” even if they isn’t any.  In our area, we get “funnel cloud” sightings and the news treats it like it is a tornado in the Midwest.  Live coverage, local witnesses, the whole bit. Most that ever happens is a roof is damaged or fence blown down.

one day they are going to have some real news to report. I wonder how they'll handle it.
