There are 16,612 photos and files in private messaging, this is in GB of storage. We have started deleting pvt message pictures, this will take a bit of time to accomplish, if you want to save any, do it right away.

Next topic, picture sizes: We have had to lower the high limit of file sizes, in house hosting is limited to a file size of 78KB. Some members have problems resizing pictures, but every operating system, Windows, Apple, Linux has simple photo editing software included, also you can use one of the many free picture hosting sites. Ask other members how they like to get this done and for help, Murff is an expert at this as well.

Modern cell phones now can take high quality photos but the file sizes are larger than ever, so everyone needs to learn how to resize a picture.

This is notice for members: We know we are having an issue with storage space, causing a failure to upload pictures in posting. We had it fixed yesterday but it is back today.

Until we get this settled with the hosting service it will help if members can use an off site picture hosting service and link their pictures from there. I see Murff and others have made a number of suggestions.

We are sorting out a change in policy with our hosting service, we have a favorable plan that they may not like so much now (we are investigating what is behind our changed status). We may have this fixed today, or it may take a couple of days, not yet sure. The real issue is we save our favorable plan, or our cost may quadruple or more.

Thanks all for understanding as we work this problem out. The thread is not locked so open to questions etc.

Regards,

Ed

In addition to Ed's post above, if you are like me and have a few thousand old Private Messaages that you no longer need, please delete them if they contain old pictures! It's amazing how many files are hosted on the CCF (over several hundred thousand files, not all photos) as of this posting.

Many of the photos are in Private Mesages. We can delete them with the Admin tools but would rather not do that for obvious reasons.

Before anyone asks, we are not able to read private messages! But we can see files and photos.

Thank you all for your understanding at this time.

Mark and Greg. I started out with the PM icon and then kind of worked my way around tapping here and there(real tech stuff🤣) till I saw a little trash can icon. Tapped on that and it asked if I wanted to delete all messages. Sorry that’s not much help. Like Chuck said. I did it and now I don’t remember how.

Would a policy of deleting all PM pics after 6 months (or whatever) be agreeable to the community? This gives plenty of time to save the ones we want to Keep. Perhaps the capability exists for this to happen without admin input after it is set up?

You are on to something here, and earlier today I put in a request to limit mail boxes to twenty messages each.

These measures are need for us to avoid having advertising on our forum, and keep it member supported and free. I was wrong on the conservative estimate about costs in the first post, our cost would much more than quadruple if we do not manage the resources better. The last of the pictures in pvt messages will be removed tomorrow.  Excess and old messages need to be remove by each member, the mods can not see or remove members pvt messaging of course. Thanks all for helping.

Just my thoughts.

1. Do what is needed to keep this site going.
2. Making pictures harder to load would be a pain. Hard enough for an old guy now.
3. Although pictures in who's drinking with me and the off topic thread are really fun they are just fun. Would like this to stay but could be purged as needed without taking the fun out of it.
4 keeping the really good sticky threads is important. It was not long ago people were complaining about basic question. These posts are a great resource.
5 I would gladly contribute a reasonable amount of money from time to time if it would help.
6. I will try to delete my PMs.
6 thanks to all who deal with this voodoo stuff.

Everything you mention is part of what we are doing right now to one degree or another, good ideas. One exception is your "2. Making pictures harder to load would be a pain. Hard enough for an old guy now."

It is the large pictures that consume so much storage space. Since picture size is the problem we will have to address it. One hopeful thing is I found 16,612 pictures that were tagged as in "private messages" most have been removed, and from now on we will check that category often to remove them. I also found PDF files taking up a lot of space, likely members had forgotten they were even there in their private messages.

"we have a favorable plan that they may not like so much now"

This is my thoughts.. I've seen this more than once (not forum related of course) with big companies. First one that comes to mind, is cell phone plans... You get locked into a good plan and when the provider decides it's no longer in their best interest they loop hole you out of the contract for more money/less benefit's.

I have no idea what this forum setup costs, frankly it's none of my business, but if what I said above is in anyway true it might be time to look elsewhere. I've read where several members have mentioned paying/putting money towards the problem and if that's part of the plan to move forward count me in. I can understand why you would not want to make this a requirement to join as that would only push newcomers away.. but I'm pretty sure I can give up some lantern/stove purchases so I can spend some more time here in the enablers paradise ðŸ˜

Ps I had to re-upload my avatar picture... That's like my forum face😜 I felt like a stranger for a minute😉

Don't limit PMs to 20.  That is way too little.

Make it so that the Hosting site re-sizes the pictures on upload.  That should be part of the software from this company and it should be very easy for them to do.  Fastimage resizer does it with drag and drop so this software should do the same when you upload.

Make it so you can search PMs.  You can't search so makes it so hard to find things.  Make it so you can sort PMs by size.  That way it would be easy to find any with pictures/files that need to be deleted.

This site has been good, but it is also very antiquated in today's age of very cheap storage and software capabilities.  Maybe it is time to change.

We should not be hosting pictures outside of the site. We'll be back in the same deal that PhotoYuckit put us in when the others decide to start charging and blocking.

@Erwin open your PM inbox by clicking on inbox icon at top near your avatar.
I then had to click on it again to fully open messages in what you'd expect to see as thread pages.
At this stage there was a square box to the left of the "inbox" at top left that you could click to tick, clicked it ticked all messages and a toolbar popped up at the bottom with a trash can/ delete symbol,  I hit that and then OK

I used to keep my PMs pretty clean but one of the "upgrades" made it impossible.  If you go to page 10 of your PMs and delete 2 or 3, it takes you back to page 1 and you have to start over.   I  like to keep the most recent as I do a lot of deals (or used to) on the board.   It just got too hard to keep the basket clean.  At one time you could have more than "IN" and "Archive" but no longer can find how to do that.  So I have 3K+ PMs.  TXT don't take up space and if they have deleted photos from PMs then it really isn't an issue.   If an Admin can easily delete my oldest 1000 PMs, go ahead.

I'm new here, and one of the first things I noticed about the Forum is how...small...the images posted are, and the inability to zoom in.  78KB is very small, especially compared with some other forums I inhabit, like the Omega forum ( https://omegaforums.net/ ) posted photos sometimes exceed 2mb or more.  The images are all hosted by the forum too, so my question is: just how much storage do we have here?  The cost/service ratios of hosting are something to look at, maybe?  I love the way this Forum operates, and the quality of the conversations and knowledge--but the photo issues are a little aggravating, as I believe the devil's always in the details, and the details are in the photos, lol.  Some of the lamps and stoves posted here are not getting their due exposure, at least to me.  I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way.
Quote
Nevada_Ed
It is true pictures are the primary storage problem, 4MB pictures of members dogs, lakes and yards behind a house, lots of pictures of cars, trucks, and yes bunch of GPA related pictures as well. Some of these pictures would more than fill a large monitor screen and even then not fit in the screen if displayed fully. We manage to keep advertising off the forum with just a donation button once a year or so.

We all need watch the pictures sizes, having a size limit will help get this done. It is easy to just say go somewhere else, we could lose all of the previous threads and postings in a usable format. Some hosting sites offer to migrate your forum to their service, it can be done if you have been using some open source website BB software like PHP, and a few others, but talking with some other forum admins I am told it usually is a complete mess, incomplete migration, missing parts of the SQL data base. So far every forum admin I have chatted with that has tried migration says, "start your forum over from scratch." This this is with common open source software like PHP, what we with our forum is proprietary software and so far I have not found anyplace that offers to migrate a websitetoolbox form to their own hosting, most places don't offer any migration at all due to all the problems they experienced doing it.

If we can trim back our storage volume and use smaller file sizes we may get back to being able to use our current plan that allows us unlimted bandwidth, a fixed low price for page views .05 per 1000 page views, with the first 500K views free, lets say we stay here and change plans, it is offered at a much higher base costs, .70 per 1000 page views, (that is a 1400% increase in the page views, and they only give 100K for free, i is actually even a more costly increase than 1400%).

So it is easy to say you want this or that, but not so easy for us to deliver, so many considerations. With some diligence, smaller picture file sizes, off site picture hosting when able to we might get this back in line and on track with our very desirable current plan.

Here is what the mods have been doing, culling through each category for marginal threads and moving or deleting them, the message box will stay with unlimited messaging but pictures stored that are linked to pvt messaging will be deleted monthly, all pictures linked to pvt messaging will be deleted when they are over 30 days old. We want to keep the meat and potatoes of all the good information, advice and insight.

Please bear with us as we get this fixed and back inline with our budget.

Regards,

Ed
