So, this past weekend I came across, for me anyway, an exciting find. I found an entire box of the red package peerless mantles, and two boxes of green packaged mantles.  They were $1.89 a pack. I didn’t pick any up, but they’ve not sold one in a long time,
and I have easy access to them.

My question is, are they a good mantle?  Better then Coleman?  Worth the dough?

thank you,

Joseph

Go back and get at least what you'll need for a year. Then get that many more. Mantles don't take up much space.

It really depends on when they were manufactured.  Ones several years old were thorium.  When production moved to India, they forgot to bring the quality with them and folks were not pleased with the initial batches.  As I understand it, that's now been corrected.   The one thing I don't like is that the 2C-HG, considered the equivalent of a Coleman #21, is actually much larger.  They work fine, but I wouldn't call them the equivalent of the #21.

I have no issues with Coleman mantles and stocked up heavily when they were on clearance a couple of years ago.

If it says Peerless and it's a sock type mantle your Coleman's will love you. Some conversation still exists over the Philippines produced Peerless being superior to the now made in India Peerless.

I'm okay with either but use the Philippines Peerless sparingly.

If it says on the package "made for American and European markets", then they most likely will not have thorium in them. Also note the place of manufacture.

It all depends on who you ask.🙄  Buy them, try them, and give us your opinion.

If they say made in the Philippines they are good quality. $1.89 per pack is a good price.  I’m with Ernie, buy a box of each.  Mantles don’t go bad.

If “ they’ve not sold one in a long time” I would see if they would give you a deal on all of them especially is they say made in the Philippines. Depending on the deal you might be able to sell 1/2 to pay for the other 1/2.

not looking for any more Bday gpas. Honestly, if you have a 10-72 don’t let me know about it.

If they're from the Philippines, buy the box!

They're a very heavy-duty, bright mantle. The green package ones are probably 111s, which are ideal for the big 500cp singles.
It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.

Yeah, the green or 24a Coleman equivalent is close to the #99.

Yeah, most any of the 500 cp lanterns could use either one. It's a personal preference thing since one is longer and the other is bulb shaped.

That’s true, and he did say they’ve been there for a while.

"I knew I should have bought them all."

Do your research. There may be a reason they haven't been bought, like they don't fit common lanterns. Maybe you can get a couple and post a picture of the packaging.

Red is the 2C-HG which is the 21a equilivant. Green is 24-A which is a 500cp mantle.

“How about 1 each if I buy all you have”, if they say no, then jump to 1.25ea then 1.50 eventually you may get back to 1.89, no tax and no shipping, and that would be a steal but I would try to ‘bundle and save’.
