Amazon, or some eBay sellers. I bought 20 packs of Coleman brand for a dollar a pop on eBay
My friends don’t call me “Lantern/lampie Levi”
for nothin’,if they did call me that.

Looking for bday lanterns 8/38, 8/41,
10/25, and 8/07

I'm sure our host has something that would work.

There's a whole Just Mantles section.

Happy shopping.  😎

Yeah Mike is the next cheapest to Walmart (when they have them) I have been running the cheap Chinese mantles for testers, but the last bunch I bought the bottom tie point comes undone and opens up... So not sure what I'll do next time..

I don't ever use "tester" mantles. I do a thorough fettle and have very rarely had to waste a mantle.
It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.

At 4$ a pack, they’re about the same, but a big box is more convenient.

Once I learned on here how to preheat and fire up the lantern without a mantle I rarely waste one anymore. If you need them real quick and can't wait on the mail I suggest you look at bait and tackle shops, outdoor stores, and full service hardware stores in your area. In my area Academy sports, True Value Hardware and the bait shop by the state park still carry them.

I also do the mantless burn on every lantern... But I still run "test mantles"... What isn't a test mantle come to think of it?... Silk lites? Those cost more than half of the lanterns I would've run them on ðŸ˜

Meaning, If im selling a lantern on my site, I do a test burn and video before listing. Due to the mantle not making it to final destination. Plus i use the cheap camping too, due to breakage or what not

For test mantles I use the 10 cm "butterfly" mantles from China. I tie them off high with a twist tie like below, and they run pretty good. Looks like they are now going for about $10 for 30.

Sounds like the cheap Chinese ones would work for this.  Only issue I have with them is the long silky string that doesn't tie well.

If you put a test mantle on to check out a lantern and everything's fine, then either you use that lantern with a crappy mantle until the mantle fails, or you tear it off and put on a real mantle. I think it's cheaper in the long run to do a complete fettle and then naked burn to determine the lantern will burn properly.

So again with my question... What is a real mantle? If it's silk lites then out of all my collection only 3 or 4 lanterns don't have test mantles... I hoard my silkies... They've not been made in what? 30 years? Once they're gone.. They're gone. It has to be a pretty special lantern to get one. If there is another "real" mantle I'd love to hear about it...

I do a complete tear down, then if i put it in my store for sale, i make a video and photos of it running for the buyer... I almost got screwed from a scammer stating it didnt work and caught his whole town on fire, Jerks. Thanks to awesome collectors that had my back as i dont use facebook, caught the lairs posting the lantern running and posing pictures with it... I won that case (only case against me ever). So i show the testing that it works and there are no problems to cover myself. Those are what i call test mantles. Make sense?

Brother J, check some of the local mom and pop hardware stores. Our Walmart quit carrying them a month ago but our local hardware stores still have them. They’re $4.49 for a two pack but it’s better than nothing lol! I’m thinking of buying them out in the next couple of days. As usual, OCP would be my next point of purchase.

If I was a betting man, the lack of mantles at Walmart should up the price on newer mantles and the older silklites.

I’m a city slicker but there’s still mom and pop shops in the cool buildings downtown. Probably family owned for a century or more.
Anyway, I wish I was as big brained as you guys. I just throw my beat mantles on and take em fishing and test with em. For those who’ve heard my mantle story...   I’m sad that I did that.

This.

Doing a naked burn on a lantern only requires low pressure and patience. You will see quickly if it is functioning as designed without a mantle.

I think calling them proofing mantles would best fit OP's scenario since they are for evidentiary proof in the event an unscrupulous buyer files a claim.

One could guess the OP in post #12 saying, " I do a test burn and video before listing" could be interpreted as using no mantle, or not. I didn't want to assume.

Jason,
Jerry's ace hardware @ Seminole blvd. & 123rd ish. ave. has Coleman mantels but not cheap, for test mantels I do just what Zoomkat does, cheap Chinese mantels from e bay and use the ties from bulk ice machines and tie them above the burner cap.
