You should have bought two!

Maybe work with someone that does casting and have some made?  There seems to be a market...

Hi Steve. From my records for the CA 249 series, Toronto used the cast aluminium horse shoe shaped preheater cup from 1938 until 1941. Similar to the one also used on the 242K. Then they used the brass preheater cup you have shown until sometime in 1950, and then changed to the circular brass cup until the end of production of the 249.
Lots of Canadian 249s turn up down here, and I have quite a few of them to compare, so I'm confident that the changes came about pretty much in the years I have listed.

Hope you all have a good 4th of July to morrow, mate.

Here are my two Canadians 249. The one on the right arrived without a preheating cup so ended getting one from OCP to test the lantern and I’ve been looking for the copper one for almost a year now.

Yup, not an easy one to find, believe they were used from 42 to 48 or 49.
I've had a few come with my part racks.

To use or not to use, that is now the question 😁

I've seen the brass horseshoe-shaped preheater cup on a 249 that I worked on sometime back. I think it was dated 2/49 or something. Unfortunately the lantern's not with me now as it does not belongs to me.
Didn't know they're not too common in the US as well.

249's are not that common period !!! i have 3 maybe 4 i think . i search 249 on ebay every day and not much pops up compared to to 242 200 ect .  thats part of my interest , not that common .

My recently purchase was a 249E still not in my hands and it will not get shipped until August or September with my 231 and 206.

Yes Steve, All the CA 249 models, including the 249D and E, had the old style clip, with the two small tabs,.. not like the 242K one though. That 242K and early 247 one has full length tabs on it's clip. I will try and find my pic of the two clips.

I think I have looked at every 249 picture in the forum archives here, other forums, and on the internet, and that horseshoe type of P-cup was definitely used in CA in '49 and early 1950, maybe not exclusively,.. but not thereafter.

You're also correct that the USA made 249 also used that same P- cup, but I'm not sure of the period when it changed to the brass circular cup.
There is a post in the archives here from member "vega" in 2014 showing a USA made 249 dated 10/49 with one of the horseshoe cups.

Hope that helps and does not confuse.

Keith.

Edit. Here are the two early preheater cup clips I referred to above. The 242K clip is on the right.

I have a Canadian 3-45 with that preheat cup and tabbed clip. and a green collar. It came from down under so they must've exported a lot of them.

Dan, Yes, lots of them turn up down here, but not many dated after 1950, Mostly the early ones, and the all seafoam painted ones, form the '40s.
That's understandable as Coleman Australia made the 249 and 242B models in Australia, under a licence agreement with Coleman Canada, from 1950 to 1960, so there was no further need to export them downunder.
There must have been a good demand for Coleman to make them here.

Keith.
