Starting a new thread for our next Great coleman campout. Discussion is centering on a Western Sierra gathering in Aug. or more likely Sept. Input on proposed sites is appreciated, though Matt and Linus are working on specifics, it is presently an open discussion.
Where?
When?

Warm Regards,

There are a ton of places on the Eastern Sierra side, Lake Davis is indeed a great place, Frenchman Lake area close to that, but both those places route a little further than some of the areas like Eagle lakes, those places save an hour or more drive time for people that come from lower Calif. If drive time is not so important Washoe Lake State park is between Carson City and Reno off US 395, one bonus is so many places to hunt Coleman & antiques, field trips so to speak. No hooks ups but good bathrooms and showers. Jane and I go to that campground a lot, no reservations, lots of spaces, and a few of us can park stuff to hold for others. One place that is too close (noisy) to the hwy (US 80) but a very nice campground, with reservations, nice river with swimming & fishing right on the camp ground is called Hamshire Rocks. This camp ground has one main advantage: easy access from Central/Northern Calif and Nevada, sort of in the middle for travel.

For Jane and I, we can do the second half of July, but she is a school teacher and school starts Aug.

Ed, could you do weekend of July 14th? If we are going in July, we need reservations pronto. Thinking This may be a good weekend because everyone will be burned out after the Fourth of July weekend

HAs anyone been to upper and lower blue lake out of hope valley of hwy 88?

I was leaning towards a more off grid type of location due to the difficulty of getting reservations at this time in the season as well as a higher elevation to get away from the heat.

Im looking at maps now.

I spend about 4 days a week there in the summer.. it’s like 80 or less..it’s always got a great breeze and it splits the plumas and Sierra counties so it’s only about 20 mins to town either way. Reservations can be maid there...I’ll post the info when I get home..

Talking with Jane, she says the only weekend we can make it is the one on the 20th and we know this might not fit for others. There is a second possibility of me attending by myself at a later date and I am not constricted by Jane's schedule, we usually always go camping together. At some point the organizers just have to call it after they get a little input!

I have camped above Upper Blue Lake at Lost Lake near The Nipple. It was an amazing place to camp.

Upper and Lower Blue Lake looked to have some very nice facilities.

I probably won't be able to attend, we're starting first cut soon and will be busy for the duration.

Gold Lake has only 37 sites and no reservation through Recreation.gov.   When I have been in that area it has always been crowded.  Pretty country though.
Lake Davis was pretty nice last year.  However I know that it is a bit of an extra distance for some.  Ed mentioned Hampshire Rocks.  Although the highway noise is an issue, it is located well and the camps are nice.  Great rock formation for the light up also.  Have to say I prefer Davis but Hampshire is second on my list.  July 20th would work for me.  Both locations have available sites for that weekend.  Lightning Tree at Davis is where we camped last year.

I'll likely be off in the hinterlands somewhere up north when this gathering takes place, but here are some suggestions...

I know the area well. Blue Lakes is always busy in the middle of summer. Little chance of snagging more than one or two campsites on weekends. Hope Valley has some nice dispersed camping areas, as does Markleeville, but no campfires permitted during fire season. The Blue Lakes Road also has a campground and some nice dispersed areas.

Spicer Meadows Reservoir, near Bear Valley off Hwy 4, has a group camping area that might still be available. It doesn't seem to get much use. There's also nice dispersed camping areas at nearby Utica and Union Reservoirs.

I like the idea of spicer, if we can get the group site. I called and no one answered the reservation line.

I have always wanted to go to Utica as well.  Ill keep trying spicer to see if there are any weekends we could get the group site.

spicer - no updates. I left a message with the organization that handles the group site reservations. If that doesnt work - how important is being near water?

I haven't been to Union and Utica lakes in a few years.  It used to be 4 wheel drive access, but they have a paved road almost to it now.  Last time facilities were limited compared to what most are used to.  Maybe someone has been there recently.

The Antelope Lake area had a burn a few years ago so I don't know how accurate the description of the area is today.  Also, the road up from hwy 395 is quite steep and curvy for those with trailers.  Just a heads up.

Is this tentative?
You'll need to enter "Plumas-Eureka" as the Park, using "-" in the middle if following Ed's link or doing a separate search to make reservations thru ReserveCalifornia, not ReserveAmerica. I see a bunch of tent and plain camp sites available. My tablet is pretty slow scrolling. Some sites lumped together still. I think I'm the closest year round member and I camp at other spots in the area, we can take a pickup drive or mtb up past the Park, drive or walk I think to the Jamison Mine where I park when backpacking to Grass or Wades Lakes. Drive over to the Lakes Basin area which has numerous CG's or hike to different lakes or just see Gold Lake.

You guys are great! That is a fantastic area, believe me, it will hard to find a better camp ground and one that is so centrally located to everything. I will post a list of the campsites today that are ranked as great through not so great and which are for tent only and for RV’s. I will also list hikes, dinning, lakes, fishing , golf and areas of interest..

I’m at work now....and yes..I have ranked and mapped EVERY campsite within a 20 mile radius of that area...😐😐😐

If something comes up and I have to bail that would be on me but at this point I have it penciled in to my calendar. Looking forward to another great camp out with a great bunch of people.
