Thought I would post this in Just Bull to gauge interest since this category gets more views and if got any steam we can move it or repost it in the gatherings category.

I have been thinking for a while about starting  a small, “socially distanced” (to meet state mandates) gathering/light up here in north central NC. Specifically at Mayo River State Park around Stoneville NC. This park has an incredible main shelter designed by a renowned architect that studied under Frank Lloyd Wright and was built in the late 40’s early 50’s. that could be used and would be a fantastic place to light up with lanterns. I know there are a few guys on here within a hour or two and it’s right on the Virginia border (just south of Martinsville) so it could draw a few of the Virginia guys down as well.

Main objective is the opportunity to get to hangout and talk lanterns, enjoy good company. Possibly fire up some Coleman grills and enjoy some good grub as well. Camping could be a possibility but another park would have to be used as there is no campsites at this one but it does have 2 fishing ponds and really nice hiking trails.

Due to the COVID mandates we should probably keep it to under or right at 10 people, but I don’t think it would have to be strictly monitored if was just close to that number.

As far as dates go I’m open to suggestions. Was thinking around mid September but can definitely be different.

Please chime in with any interest or suggestions! Here are a few pics of the shelter I was talking about.

I'd be interested in joining a north central North Carolina light up, just not at the current time.

Count me in for summer/fall of 2021 provided COVID19 situation is under control by then with vaccine.

Cliff I totally understand. My main focus was getting a small group together in the meantime but who knows, if the general consensus it to put it off until the corona virus stuff dies down then that’s exactly what we’ll go with.

More like four or five hours for me, I'm on the coast East of New Bern.  I'm definitely interested anytime after the heat goes down.  The only thing that would keep me away would be the arrival of a hurricane.

Hard for me to plan that far out, but I'm interested.  If that's as close to the beach as we can get a gathering together I'll have to make the trip.  It's at least a 5-6 hour drive for me.

I would be interested as long as things don’t spike much in the area here .  I have been hoping for something close by and it Sounds like a good time. Any weekend in September is good for me right now.

Stephen, I’m good with that weekend. If the general consensus puts us at being to risky, I fully understand until waiting for safer times. This Covid situation is definitely strange times for me. I hate not being able to hang out with people.

Hi Stephen
Thanks for putting this out there.
Its a nice 2-hr drive for me and if it can be kept small and conformed to socially distancing guidelines, I would be interested
However, this virus thing is pretty dynamic and my plans could change depending on the situation at that time.

I totally understand all the COVID concerns. I promise you I’m a mask wearer and a hand sanitizer toter whenever I go ANYWHERE. I probably worry more about it than anyone I know personally. I do however feel that very small gatherings can be had by by people that have been cautious and abide by the standard protocols. For example, if we do make this happen I won’t be shaking any hands(even though I’d like to) or standing closely to anyone and you can bet I’ll be wearing a mask with hand sanitizer in my pocket LOL.

All that being said, I really don’t have an issue with or think it’s crazy to delay this. My whole goal with this is to have a good time with some good people, not have us in a situation where we’re all worried. It won’t hurt my feelings one bit if you think we should put it off so please chime in!

New Bern is a great town and one of my favorite places in NC! I was just at the coast last week but we were at Topsail.

Forgot to add that, I’m guessing, those of us with children in school, will be the newest wildcard in everything I guess. Mine are out of high school so no worries on my end.

Is there a specific area or group of camp sites we should try to get reservations in?

@SteveA

I was worried when you mentioned how far you would be traveling that you might have missed the part in my first post that this site did not offer camping. My thinking behind this was that due to COVID, the option of a small “just for the day” get together and hangout a while socially distanced might be our safer option. This would hopefully get the ball rolling for future camping style get togethers in this area after COVID settles down and also “scratch the itch” in the meantime. I apologize for the misunderstanding and would love to have you but I would totally understand if the distance just for the day would be way too far.

There are however campgrounds in the area that could be utilized by people from farther away. I will say, due to COVID and the large amount of people wanting to still get out, camping in general has skyrocketed and most campgrounds around are booked solid for the weekends months in advance. That was another reason I chose to initially try this as a day event while our good weather was still here.

If I still lived in Boone I'd be there in a heartbeat - with some lanterns ready to fire and cast iron ready to cook!

Hope you all have fun - pics or it didn't happen!

Ya, it's a bit far for just an afternoon.  To bad, I was looking forward to it.  I'll keep an eye on that park,  Maybe it'll open up for camping before then.

Hi Stephen - Really great of you to try and put something like this together.  With family health issues, I can't make a firm commitment, but will keep an eye on this thread and try to make it on whatever date fits everyone the best.  If it turns out we can join you, most likely we'd be camping at https://www.guilfordcountync.gov/our-county/county-parks/hagan-stone-park This County Park doesn't see a lot of use so last minute arrivals generally aren't a problem.  It has water and electric hookups with sites for larger rigs in an open grassy field.  Smaller campers and tents have the option of wooded sites (also with w&e).  A dump station is available and the bathhouses have hot showers.  The Park does have a lot of local day use in the non-camping areas so Its generally safe and clean.  I'd guess forty five minutes to an hour's drive from Mayo River SP.

FTR, the 413 you gave me is doing great, thanks.  Had a chance to use it down at Cape Hatteras last week.

Hi Stephen, thanks for putting this together and sorry for the late reply.  Schedule is insane right now but the kids start virtual school on Monday and my schedule should start to settle down.  Definitely interested if it works out.

@huachuca good to hear from you!! Glad the old 413 is still doing its job for you as well. Good info on Hagan Stone Park, if more people wanna camp and it makes things easier for people that live farther away I’m definitely down for moving it to a park with a campground. PLEASE let me know guys if you all wanna try and camp. I just camped this past weekend at Lake Reidsville and had an awesome time there. Maybe a good option to move it to.

@ecblanks hope you can make it! Would love to get the chance to hangout.

I guess my only concern is that the pavilion at Hagan Stone is First Come First Serve,
but I do like that the park is going by the 50% of normal occupancy rule.

Bill,  unless COVID has changed things, Hagan Stone has seven covered picnic shelters that can be reserved in advance at $85-$125/day.  No where near as nice as the one in Stephen's first post but they could work.

I called this morning and the picnic shelters are available for rent but there is a 25 person max restriction due to COVID,  I'm not trying to push Hagan Stone; its just that I'm fairly familiar with it as I worked there some fifty years ago as an intern and we often camp there when visiting our daughter who lives in the area.

It is only one pavilion that  I saw referenced at the webpage with their Campground Rules at:
https://www.guilfordcountync.gov/home/showdocument?id=7304
where it states:

6. The pavilion located inside the C-loop is first come, first serve. It can be used during the hours of 8:00
am and 10:00 pm. The park reserves the right to limit the use of the pavilion during designated times
including but not limited to holidays, special events, park events, etc.

Guys sorry for just now posting this but I had something come up a couple weeks ago for the weekend we had tentatively set for the mini get together. I was delaying posting this to see if it would change but it hasn’t. I’m going to have to delay it a few weeks to possibly mid October. Does that sound good for those interested?
