I finally decided to cave in to my wife and buy a pop up a few weeks ago. I’ve always thought they were kinda cool but I have always preferred to sleep in the back of whatever LandCruiser I had at the time. After marriage and 2 kids I decided to get a roof top tent for my LandCruiser, my kids and I loved it but the wife wasn’t crazy about climbing a ladder to go to sleep so we settled on this. I’m a “less is more” kinda guy but I’ll have to admit it was nice having AC and the extra amenities. We took the canoe along and the boys and I did some fishing. Had the chance to fire up a recently acquired 200A along with a 413 for cooking, a 400 single burner for coffee duty and even used a collapsible oven I scored a while back for morning biscuits. We all had a blast and came home Sunday evening wore out! Me being much more tired than my 7 and 5 year old kids LOL.

Nice! I'm on my 3rd pop up now, a 1999 Dutchman. My first was a 2002 Starcraft, then the wife got tired of camping so I bought a small Viking for just me. Then we were heading to Disney and found this Dutchman. I love my tents, but it is nice to have A/C and a real bed

Those tent campers, pop ups, are great gateway campers to eventually owning travel trailers, RV's etc.  I still think the best times we had camping as a family was with the pop-ups.  They were just so practical and easy to use and haul.  Of course, eventually you see the other folks with bigger rigs and think that is the way to go...

Great pictures, Stephen!  Nice looking camp.  Good to see that you and the family got out to spend some quality time together.  I always enjoyed the pop up my folks bought back in the early 70’s.  It was a Nimrod and we hauled that thing all over the western US.

Nice quality time and pics!

Took my RTT off on the weekend, since it's generally only me and the boy (wife and daughter don't share the love of 4x4ing) I'm going to trial sleeping inside just to lose the weight up top on side angles.
Might mount the RTT on a 6x4 trailer as a small pop up for future use lol

Looks like a very nice time, Stephen; thanks for the pictures, too.  I have no idea what a trip like that is like, but I'm glad it was a good time for you.

Nice looking campsite setup. I like the pop ups but I don’t think I can back after I let the Wife and son in a travel trailer. I always wanted to build my own teardrop or canned ham. I haven’t given up on that dream yet lol.

Thanks for all the compliments guys! It was really nice being able to walk into AC for a bit during the heat of the day. I really wanted a small travel trailer but I really didn’t want it to be much heavier than a pop up. My LC would have probably towed a small travel trailer ok but I don’t like to struggle pulling anything in the mountains.

@Barrett I used to set up a cot in the back of the LandCruiser for years when it was just myself. I absolutely loved it, the cot was low enough that I could sit comfortably on it and not have to lean over but it was tall enough that I could still store things under it.

@Smokey12 thanks for the compliment on the Cruiser! I’ve been addicted to them for far longer than I have lanterns LOL

@Majicwrench the boys caught 35 of them and I don’t think one of them were bigger than the one my youngest is holding. All bluegill and sunfish. I purposely set them up with tiny hooks and red worms so the fishing would be more about quantity instead of quality to keep them interested. You can tell by the smile on his face they didn’t mind them being small LOL

I promise you this canoe is beyond well used LOL! I bought about 11 years ago from my brother in law and he stayed on the Dan River with it. It has a 10 year old patch that’s still holding strong. It’s a Old Town Discovery 158, the bottom is oil canned and it is by far the most stable canoe I’ve ever been in. I can put myself with both of my young boys in it and not once has ever felt tippy. If and when I ever wear it out I’ll try and find another one just like it.

With a bit of care your sons will still be using that Old Town long after you could have imagined.
I left my 10-year old 16 ft Indian River in NY with a friend and even though it was not quite as sturdy as an Old Town or a Wenonah,
it patched up just fine

Yeah we were out camping this past weekend too. Went to Ohio for the apache camper Ohio roundup.
We were the only ones who had Coleman white gas anything. Yesterday morning my wife was making breakfast on a 413 and a 425 right next to it and 2 of the other regular attendees came over to check out the"16th century campers on site 63" I had 4 lanterns (2 turds, a 228 big hat and a 288) lit each night, and besides the 413 and 425, the only one that never got lit this weekend was the propane stove. I have 3-4 more Coleman stoves to get straight plus 2 catalytic heaters that won't light to save my life.

Yup they sure do. I only have one but am in a group that owns predominantly apache pop-ups. One attendee at the last round up has 3.
I had thought about getting something different but after paying the state of Illinois their $164 extortion to get the title in my name after 4 years of owning this one (my 3rd so far) I can't get rid of it for a while. That money never comes back if you decide to sell.
