In the interest of not hijacking someone else's thread about ordering I thought I would ask here. Has anyone used or have any info on the "new" peerless mantles since production moved?

I LOVED the older Thorium mantle quality and am hoping it comes back.

Probably time for a mantle enthusiast/collector to purchase a radiation detector like below to check the new mantles. The GM-320 is available on Amazon for $80. Would be an interesting device to take to lantern meets, flea markets, and yard sales.

I ordered from Mark in New Zealand a couple weeks ago. Got here in 7 days.

He has BOTH Yttrium and Thorium. Since shipping was around 7-$8 USD for a plastic envelope I plan on ordering a lot more next time.

Don't let the "price" scare you (listed in $ NZD) as the exchange rate greatly benefits U.S. buyers at this time and Canadian buyers just a bit.

Out of respect for Cigar Mike who also sells Peerless and runs this forum, I won't post the link. I don't think Mike has any of the new one's in yet.

It's not a matter of good or bad, just preference.

Some of us, myself included, have used plenty of brands, both Yttrium and Thorium and prefer the Thorium.

I have experienced better performance from the Thorium peerless and just prefer them. Some are concerned about potential "health concerns." Unless you're snorting mantle dust up your nose or licking your fingers after handling them you will be just fine.

I did see that spot in NZ that is carrying them. I sent an email yesterday just to confirm that they would ship entire boxes but haven't received a response yet.

I would much prefer to buy from OCP but, per an email to Mike yesterday, he has no idea if or when he will receive any Peerless Thorium.

I had that same issue. Solution: The pay pal account must be linked to a credit card. It won't go through if your pay pal account is linked to your bank account.

It's no big secret, it's not like he's underselling Mike or anything. Just happens to have something Old Coleman Parts doesn't.

Paypal never worked for me either, in the end I just used a credit card. Just like Chuck, my shipment took about 7 days to get to the states.

Thanks to everyone that has ordered from the website and I'm sorry about the issues that everyone has had with PayPal, it does seem to require a credit card due to the exchange between USD and NZD. I've also added Shopify Payments as an alternative to PayPal.

Also, I don't know what has happened to the contacts page on the website, I used to get a huge amount of spam through which stopped all of a sudden a month or two back, I imagine when the page stopped working! Best to email me directly on sales@justmantles.co.nz if you have any questions or would like to look at a bulk order like Jecsd1. Very happy to try and pass on savings if people would like to buy bulk (by the box) as I can probably combine it with a stock order from India. Will depend on the exchange rate of course, which seems very volatile at the moment.

Any feedback, Chucker or pagrey, on how the new mantles, especially the Thorium ones, perform?

Out of all the yttrium mantles I've tried so far the 2C-HG you sent are the best I've used, especially on the 220/228. I do like the American Mantle 8003 on singles but they do seem to run hot and are not so good on my twins. I just put a pair of the 2C-HGs on a 220D last night and burned them for a few hours. They have a nice weave compared to all the others. I'd like to hear feedback about the thorium mantles too, nice we have both to choose from.

PEERLESS REVIEW (unfinished):

I am currently running a 220F outdoors with a good old Silk-lite on one side and a new Thoriated Peerless 2CHG on the other.

My preliminary report is:
Seasoning went uneventful. At first light it seemed to darken a bit like I was running kero. It's been running 10 minutes or so and much of the black/orange color is gone. The 'white' is as bright as the Silk-lite.

I will take pics and upload them including after shut-down so the weave can be seen and any holes.

Okay, here's the new Peerless (thorium) next to the Silk-lite 21. Believe it or not both are lit on a low flame.  Silk-lite on the left.

New Peerless lit .jpg
And here they are with a little less flame:

New Peerless low flame.jpg
And finally after the lantern went out:

New Peerless vs Silk-lite.jpg

Well, like I said the new Peerless appear darker, both when lit and unlit. The 'white' parts of the mantle looked equally 'white' on both the Silk-lite and Peerless when running except for the two areas on the side of the Peerless which you can see in the first pic. The uniformity of the mantle is comparable to the former manufacturer. No complaints from me on the shape.

Summary, (actually just placed a big order last night) I'll buy more. Maybe the next test needs to be on a 242 series lantern to see if the burn can be more uniform, without small dark areas. Could it be my lantern? Sure.

My experience with the new Peerless Yttrium mantles is that they are much whiter than the early non radioactive mantles. They seem whiter to me than some old Silk Lite mantles, especially in hot burning lanterns or kerosene.

All four of mine burned in pretty asymmetric, almost like they had heavy pleats or stitching on one side. The second pair I faced the logo the same direction so the darker areas faced the same direction. Must be how they sew them, probably not the lantern. Now if I could only remember the correct direction so I could aim it at the air tube. Great pics by the way, nice to see them next to a silk-lite.

Paul, the 'dark' area of my Peerless is to the right of the logo/printing. I faced the logo straight ahead towards the valve.

An undersized mantle may burn brighter at low power, but may be out done by a bigger mantle at full output. I've noticed "ghost flames" around what appear to be undersized mantles when the output is increased to max. To check different mantle brightness at full output, darkening glasses may be needed (and is sure better on old eyes). The $5.00 gas welding goggles from harbor freight should do the job. I have the below Pyramex Integra shade 5.0 safety glasses I use when tinkering with my gas rig, and they work well when close in on a lantern at full output. I just ordered two more pair as this is a pretty good price for shade 5.0. Take your Integra shades and a GM-320 radiation detector to a meetup and people will be keeping an eye on you! [wink]

No "ghost flames" here or over-flaming other than at start up.

You can also use your thumb and place it between the mantle and your observing eye - over-flaming will be seen if any is present.

I bought some and I don't think so. I do remember the color band on the Thoriated one's is a darker color - blue or green- depending on which you bought. Yttrium would have the lighter color band.

Thanks Paul, you will see the new stock Yttrium has a little white sticker on the pack with 'YYYY' printed. You can see it on the picture above although it looks like it has been cut in half when you sliced the pack open. The new stock Thorium has no marking at all that I can see although the samples I received early on did have a similiar 'TTTT' sticker. KR Mark

No. It was sold to Sam (Gasman?) who operated the business as Peerless. He then sold it to the current owner who moved the operation to India.
