I must be nuts for paying $50 for this thing. It's missing the decal and it's got bugs in it. And it's never been tested. 😉

It's in possession of USPS so I guess it's ok to talk about it. I didn't want to jinx the deal before,,,lol.

Seriously though. This popped up on craigslist and the guy was asking only $55. 😈  But it was half way on the other side of the country. I had to call and ask if he would ship. He agreed.

He said his Grampa bought it and never lit it. Just put it away. He said it was nos. Does it look unfired to you guys. Doesn't really matter. I think I did ok for $50. But I did pay him well to ship it right.

So merry Xmas to me,,,lol.

Here's the sellers pics. One of them looks like it has a moth flying in there,,,lol.

Awesome score! Sears globe and case all in mint condition. Would had to have been fired since the mantles are burned in and expanded. Only thing I’d be worried about is the globe making it. I’ve had a few shipped in cases and a lot of times the sellers think they can just box the case up with little to no protection for the globe.

Ya. I told him I would pay extra if he would ship it the way I wanted.

I had him remove the globe and put in a separate box, then put that in the main box. Then I told him to don't just let the lantern rattle around in the case. Put some Walmart bags or something around it so it doesn't get scratched up.

Hope it all makes it.

That's a good deal for $50 with the case and the original globe.  You can see a little heat discoloration on the generator but not much anywhere else, so it wasn't run very much.

The anticipation is going to kill me on this one. I had a bit of an issue with the seller. We had talked on the phone, and texted all week end. Seemed like a great guy. Said he would ship first thing Monday morning and let me know.

Monday evening I hadn't heard anything so I texted and asked did it ship. He said he had it all packaged but didn't make it to the post office in time. Would ship Tuesday and let me know. Ok. No biggie.

I still hadn't heard anything Tuesday after 3:00 so I texted "Did it ship,,,,lol"   His reply was "Get off my case".

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think I was on his case with 2 texts in 2 days.  Three hours later I get a pic of the tracking number.

I didn't see anything about insurance on the receipt. So I called the post office. They said it shipped it ground, cheap as possible with NO INSTANCE!!. I paid him extra to pack it well and cover it for $200 in insurance. I'm glad I insisted on paypal with buyers protection.

I bet he didn't even take the globe off.

So this will be nerve racking until the 23rd when I get it. Wish me luck,,,lol.

Well I got it. What a beauty!!.  Got couple little issues.

The seller wasn't exactly honest. Don't know if I should be mad, or just be glad I got it in one piece.

First. He said in his ad and repeatedly on the phone that it was "NOS" , "NEVER BEEN FIRED" and "NEVER HAD FUEL IN IT".  Well all though inside the tank looks brand new, I can smell fuel in there and on the cap. And the mantles have been burned, and you can tell the gen was burnt.  I know. No big deal. But it is not nos.

Second. I paid him extra to take the globe off and put it in a separate box. He did not. What he did was put duct tape all over it, and I'm going to have a hell of a time cleaning it off. Thankfully the tape did protect the globe and it made it. But is the chemical that I'm going to have to use to remove the residue on the globe going to cause it to crack. You guys know how that can go.

Point is I paid extra for proper packaging, and it's not nos. Normally I wouldn't give 2 craps about it. But if that globe cracks......  I think what happened is if you read above, he got mad that I sent him 2 texts in 2 days and felt I was "On his case". So he taped up the globe and said good enough.

I just feel like I didn't get what I paid for. And for him getting mad at me, don't I have the right to get mad at him.

So enough of the negative,,,,lol. I'm sure you guys will say forget about it and move on. Which I'm sure that's what I'll do. Unless that globe cracks,,,,lol.

I just want some opinions on how you guys feel about this.

I'm going to start another reply since most probably stopped reading by now.

Hey Cal. That sucks that the seller was like that. I've used Zippo or Ronson lighter fluid many times to remove duct tape residue. Before trying to peel the tape, you might want to warm it up slightly to make the adhesive a little soft to avoid breaking your globe. The lighter fluid will not harm the globe in any way.

Lighter fluid IS CF! Save a few bucks and just use Crown fuel.

For the residue on the paint, use a soft rag and mineral spirits. The spirits won't hurt the paint in the least. This is also one of the few good uses for WD40.

Ok. I soaked the globe with lighter fluid and lit it on fire. How long should I let it burn to get rid of the residue.

Guess I better say I was joking in case anyone tries that,,,lol.

So it cleaned up the residue. But I seem to have a cloudy haze on it now that I can't get rid of. I can wipe it with my finger and it comes off. Normally I clean them with dawn. But have read tales of them cracking after a simple wash like that. So I'm going to ask what to do now. I'm scared to even touch this thing,,,lol.

Do not force anything that won't turn; valve or cleaning lever. Use a butane micro torch and gently heat the the valve nut and stem. It will loosen up.

I would just be glad that it arrived. Its a nice find. I would just use this as a learning experience. As far as being never fired, the burnt bugs, the burned in mantles, and heat discoloration in the pics are the first clue.

I don't believe many of the non lantern people are aware of unfired vs fired as we are. Many times I see listings as never fired, and I  see evidence to the contrary. Was this dishonesty? I don't know.

I would just enjoy it and focus on getting it running. This was Craigslist, so the protections found on the auction site may not be there for you. Is it worth it to you to deal with this guy again?

He wanted me to pay with some pay app on a phone. No way I'm putting my banking info on my phone. I insisted on paypal and pay the extra fee to get paypal buyers protection. I paid him extra for that since it came out of his end.

Below is what is covered under the paypal protection. Notice the second item.

What’s covered with PayPal Purchase Protection

  • You bought a book, but received a DVD
  • You bought an item described as “new,” but received something that was used
  • You purchased 3 items, but only received 2
  • The item was damaged during shipping
  • The item is missing major parts (that the seller didn’t report)
  • You purchased an item described as authentic, but received a knockoff instead

I might agree with he just wasn't aware it was fired. But he said it never had fuel in it. The cap was loose and wet so he probably emptied it. I bet he sure looked in there.

The thing is he was a jerk about the whole deal after he got my money. And the way he packed it. It wasn't like he didn't know any better. He got paid extra to do it like I asked. He said no problem. To me he basically said this guy texted me twice. So he thinks  screw him.

I know I'm carrying on,,,lol. But it's the principle,,,,lol.

I would be happy that the globe arrived safely. There is always a risk of a deal going south, without using an auction site. These Sears lanterns are commanding a higher price now, since I started collecting. Take your time removing the tape as these globes are fragile, if you're not patient with it. I don't think it's the use of Dawn, but rather the addition of using steel wool or a scouring pad that does them in.

You may want to contact the seller just so you and ebay have a record of it, noting that you paid extra for separate packing for the globe and that instead he put duct tape on it, which is generally not easy to remove.  Ask him what you should use to remove the tape without the globe breaking due to the strength of the duct tape.  Not that you'll have an issue with it cracking/breaking now, but I think you should have a written record of what transpired.  It would be a good time to mention that it's not unfired as claimed in the ad.  Again, just for the record.

Nice lantern and box at decent price.  Why play games if nothing critical is broken or missing?  You might have a claim on the extra $ to ship the globe, but you will lose because the globe is intact.  If it pains you to look at it, you can get your money back easily by selling here

And remember, this is a FUN HOBBY and not critical to much of anything.

This wasn't through ebay. It was listed on craigslist. I called and asked would he be willing to ship. He said sure, no problem.

I know what you're saying. The lantern really has nothing to do with it at this point. I know I got a great deal.

I'm just having a hard time getting over the fact that he got paid to put the globe in a different box. And he did not do that. And I would bet my life he knew it had fuel in it. It's basically another seller screwing a buyer. Oh. And it's not nos as advertised.

Ok. I'm done. I'm really am enjoying working on it. But every time I think of having to deal with him it upsets me.

Ah, I missed that it was Craigslist, never mind.   The sellermay actually not even realize that it was fired.  There was a Thermos lantern at a yard sale I looked at, but didn't want.  The seller really didn't recognize that it had been fired and I know he wasn't intentionally misleading me.   To me, the signs were obvious, but he obviously hadn't fired it up himself, or didn't recall doing so, and was certain it was still unfired.
