Isn't this one of those experiments you try when you're ready to bring your microwave to the recycling center?  🙂

I have put a neon bulb in a glass of water and ran the microwave.  It was a very cool effect, but I stopped it quickly as I wasn't ready to risk having to toss my microwave.  This was over 20 years ago, before microwave units got cheap.

Flammable liquids, open flame, what could go wrong?

@JimL For some reason, some people just don’t care. But it should be okay for your microwave as long as the plasma is contained in the glass.

It has a turntable, but easy to remove.

The only button I use on it is "Minute Plus". Mostly it makes popcorn and reheats leftovers.

Dunno. This is only the second microwave I've had. First was my parents' Amana Radarange--no turntable, all knobs instead of buttons. That one lasted from the late '60s 'til it was stolen in the early '90s.

My brother and I tortured the heck out of it as kids. Wads of aluminum foil would cause giant sparks to jump from the sides and then blow up in a flash of blinding white light. Great fun but hard to clean up before mom got home.

This is a similar--maybe identical--unit:

I'm amazed by how expensive these were new--about $4,000 in current US currency! No wonder mom was so protective of it!

I just have to say that the Food and Drug Admin, takes a pretty dim view on people microwaving plasma.  At least without the proper permit from the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (microwaves) and a license from the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (blood plasma).  I'm betting you didn't know that FDA regulates microwave ovens -- we really do.😁
