Recently, one person posted here on CCF about the seller changing the price on an item after a "collector" told the seller that the lantern was worth 3 times that much. That was a bummer. I thought this story of my experience this week was appropriate.

A week ago, I emailed a seller on CL about a "White gas lantern" he had for sale along with a bunch of other camping items. The photo didn't actually show a lantern, but instead a MilSpec box. I asked him about the lantern which I thought might be in the box. He didn't reply. So, on Wednesday morning I emailed him again and this time he replied, but didn't answer any of my questions. He said he'd be home after 4pm and gave me his address. So, I drove over there after work.

I arrive and say hello and he says, "Go around to the garage door.". He was a really nice guy.

I go around to the garage and the door is now open. On the floor is a bunch of camping gear. I look around for the MilSpec box but don't see it.

I say, "Where is it?"

He says, "Right here", pointing at the floor.

I look down and say, "Oh. That's a 275A". I pick it up and look it over. Well, the price was less than the cost of the original Coleman globe that was in it, so I thought "well . . . I guess . . ."

Then, I work up the nerve and ask him, "In the photo, there was a lantern box. What about that?"

He replies, "Oh, that . . ." and turns around walks over and picks up the MilSpec box. He continues, "This is an old military lantern. It's single mantle and really old and I don't like it. I wasn't going to sell it. I was just going to get rid of it".

Thankfully, we had masks on, because I'm sure I looked absolutely dumbfounded.

In disbelief, I said, "Get rid of it??? You mean throw it away????"

He said, "Yeah . . . Do you want it?" He kicks the box. "If you buy that one (pointing at the 275) you can have this one too. Oh, and I've got a spare new pump and some mantles for the 275. You can have all of it, plus this half gallon of white gas." Seems he just wanted it to get out of his garage as he had a new camper arriving next week. A fire sale, if you will. Lucky me!

I pull out my wallet and give him the cash, grab the items, say goodbye and head out to the Jeep. I couldn't help but think about the contrast between the person who had the seller raise the price 3x and my completely opposite experience . . . A guy happy to give the stuff away. Weird how stuff works.

So, the 275A is a 1980, and I really don't need another one, and the MilSpec is an AFM, 1967 and frankly, I didn't need another MilSpec either. I completely

tore down the AFM because I read some posts here that said it was recalled, but I didn't know why. After examining this thing I bet it might have been due to some quality issues. The check valve sits canted in the pump tube and the fold around the bottom of the fount is not anywhere close to even. The valve stem is dorked-up on the end, but I don't think that's a quality issue. The vent looks like new, but I bet that's because it was never actually used by the military. Anyway, got it back together tonight and it seems to work pretty well so far. I haven't tried the 275 yet, but he said it worked well and didn't leak or anything.

Sweet!  How did the guy eat when out using his 275a?  No stoves to be had?

@Kansas John he had cots, sleeping pads, large stainless pots and what I think was a 426. There was a guy coming for the stove and he said that whoever got here first, got the fuel. I didn't know it was a race but I won.

Well, all's well that ends well, Steve; odd how he regarded the MilSpec.  A free MilSpec is the best kind, good for you! Nice you got some other things too, especially a 275 priced cheaper than the globe.

@Gasman64, well, he was retired military. I don't know if he didn't like the MilSpec or if it was that it was single mantle. He made a point of mentioning that it was single mantle, though. He said that he hadn't lit it in 30 years and the pump leather was bone dry.

I got cussed plumb out in an email exchange for a Sears lantern on Craigslist a couple of weeks ago. It was maybe 75% on cosmetics, Coleman replacement globe but was quite possibly the 3/73 bday date I've been looking for. It was almost 2 hours away so I messaged the seller inquiring about the date code and it was. This must have made them curious and they email me thanking me for the heads up, they didn't know how much they went for on eBay and sent me links for 100% cosmetic condition lanterns with correct Sears globes. I tried explaining how condition and originality affected the value of his vs the ones he linked to. He wasn't getting it. I even encouraged him to come here to maybe learn about them and then got busy with stuff and going to the store and such. Several hours later I get an email asking if I was going to even make an offer. I told him I would happily give the asking price of $30 in his ad. The response I got was one of the most profanity laced messages I have ever received talking about how I was trying to rip him off and this place was a bunch of thieves trying to screw people so we could brag about it here and how much more he can get on eBay for it.
I emailed him and told him not to contact me again and I no longer wished to do business with him. I have kept a close eye on eBay and the lantern hasn't been listed there yet. Or on Facebook, letgo or Craigslist again. There are some squirrels out there so I say congrats on the deal you got OP.

@Rustytank cussed out? Over a lantern??? Oh, bother. How can you rip someone off for offering to give them the price they were asking? Wow! Sorry to hear about your experience.

It makes me wonder if people like that have EVER had a hobby. Maybe they don't have the money for it? Not sure what motivates them.

For fun, you should post the email and block out some of the letters of the profanity. Well . . . maybe that's not a good idea.

Yea I'm gonna let sleeping dogs lie. Now if the seller showed up here and called me out I'd post the whole string as they were.

Although a must for my collection. I can guess why the seller did not like the mil- spec lantern. Really kinda need a pre heat, no pricker rod, loud and the wind makes them flicker. Just over all not as good as a Coleman design.

The worse advice/comment can get is “That worth some money”!   The seller immediately gets the idea that something he didn’t even want a few minutes ago is going to be the answer to his financial woes. Human nature I guess.
