i see my mailbox door open this morning , i look down the street and see numerous boxes left open . i check our ring doorbell camera and sure enough at 4:30 am we see a car going super slow at our mail box , like someone is hanging out opening boxes ..... then i see a neighbor working on his mailbox with a cordless screw driver so i walk over there and see a package ripped open but tossed on the dirt , contains vitamins for someone else on our street , any way i get to the neighbors house and he has a locking mail box but they broke it open ..... DAM THIEVES !!!

If it’s locked it must have good stuff in it. Postal theft is a federal offense and stuff gets serious quickly.

It would be fun to booby trap a package with some sort of dye or something like they do with money that is given to a bank robber. They open the pkg. and it explodes dye all over them. Caught red handed and red faced!

My son couldn't find his cellphone a few weeks back, and when we called it, the local police dept. answered it. It seems a guy had been picked up in the area with mail from houses all up and down the street. He had spotted my son's cell phone where he had dropped it on the lawn while unloading groceries. When we picked up the phone, I made a comment about messing with the U.S. mail being a serious offense, and he replied "You'd think so", while shaking his head. I guess this isn't something that's as serious as we've always been lead to believe it is.

I stopped over at a friend's house a couple months ago. Between his house and neighbor's house is the neighborhood mailbox that has probably 30 metal, locking mailboxes mounted on a post. Somebody came by in the middle of the night and unbolted it from the concrete platform and stole the whole thing! They found it about a mile away in an open field busted open, mail laying on the ground blowing in the wind.

Also, my wife and I have noticed our mail box open a few times over the last couple of months, however, because I'm working from home one of us goes out to get the mail shortly after it arrives.

Scum.  Sorry about that, Steve.

We are really lucky in my neighborhood.  We get mail through our old-style slot in the front door.  Not efficient for the mailman, but very secure for us.

Really I have been waiting/thinking this kind of stuff would be soaring with people missing work due to the Covid thing. The other night I was outside just before going to bed and a car coming down the street going very slow, two young men looking around. By the time they saw me I had my cell phone camera out snapping pics of the car! For some reason the car picked up speed and left the neighborhood.

USPS won't even prosecute when the local cops catch them. Years ago some local kids not busted for over 200 mailbox vandalism and theft incidents by the local cops. Locals had the case wrapped up on a silver platter so to speak. USPS told them to go ahead and handle it. All that warning about mail tampering and theft being a federal offense is like an old toothless dog barking.

Sad.  We live outside of the home delivery area so only get mail via a PO box.  I guess we are fortunate.  Years back, someone made the news by putting a live Rattlesnake in his mailbox .  I think he was arrested!

The thing I always hated about thieves. Is they always have a excuse as to why they deserve what they stole. Like i stole it from the big mart they have plenty of money. Or homeowners insurance will pay them back for what they took. But in truth they are too sorry to work for it them self’s 😡.  For you situation I have heard of a rat trap in the mail box. It would probably break some fingers and they would sue you. And  these days they might win

If you think the car can accelerate fast for the cell phone picture you should see what happens when you hit them with a laser and a scope mounted on a rifle they really move then!

That’s horrible.  We have had something similar happen in our area before.  The other week when I had two lanterns and a stove coming' not being home, I called and had to ask my father in law to get them for me.  I didn’t want them left out overnight, available for the picking.  Sad world we live in.

That's bad! Several years ago our neighborhood got the same thing.  We all used to have old style boxes on individual posts, and I thought the improvement would be better (the mailman was lazy sometimes and didn't fully close our boxes, so sometimes the mail was wet.)

Sorry to hear that Steve!  Mail and package theft has become a big problem across the country.  I wonder if a small percentage may be caused by mail/packages being delivered to the wrong address.  I have had packages delivered to the wrong apartment, because of new or inexperienced mail carriers.  All but one was recovered, because I knew they were coming, and looked for them.  Fortunately for me I am moving to a house that has a front porch with a mail slot, and the post office has agreed to leave packages inside on the porch where they would not be visible to thieves.  I think it helps to track packages, and be waiting or have some one watch for them.

A lot of mail theft right now due to Covid.  People out of work, stimulus checks going out (still havent gotten ours), and a lot of unemployment checks in the mail.  Still no excuse for the thieves, but most of them have a meth or heroin habit to support.  Dont expect decency and honor from a doper.

Moses, I know exactly what you're talking about in Shipshewana. Businesses leave expensive products sitting out by the road on display every day, and nothing happens to it. One place has portable generators and pressure washers at the road. Those things are there all night, every night, and nobody messes with them. It's definitely a place from a different time. People still have respect for one another. Not the case around my house. A new apartment complex down the road ruined that around here. I caught 4 guys in my back yard on Easter morning a few back, trying to steal things from my neighbor and myself. I chased them off and went back in the house. 20 minutes later, they were back. I shoved my shotgun barrel through their side window and as they took off, I fired a shot over the roof of their car. I haven't seen them since.

Theft is so annoying. You work hard for something and someone just takes it away. We find most of these thieves are drug addicts, looking to make a quick buck. Sometimes we wonder how drug abuse affects us. This is one of the ways.

1 Doberman Grumble, cause she does that a lot.... Grumbles at the door if she is closed outside... (The enforcer)
grumble and bone 1.jpg

1 Swiss shepherd (still a pup when this was taken) Zowie... named by my Grand daughter 11 (The backup enforcer)

zowie 2019--08-04 e.jpg

1 Township rescue (just after rescue, a bath and an hour of removing ticks) Goolie-gone cause I haddem out..... (The onlooker / witness, take your pick)
rescue dog.jpg

And the smallest of the lot, this teeny-tiny yorky x female, Scruffy long story about the name....fully attack trained (She's the handgrenade)
Scruffy protection bite f cropped.jpg

bloem 2016 camp security wide awake mutt 07.jpg

And the warning 1 on each gate at the front, 2 at the back... There was only one event that necessitated these...... see below

sign close up.jpg
This is how it goes down.

Scruffy erupts in a frenzy of enraged stiff fur and a bark pitched to wake the living dead. Then accelerates like a V1 rocket off the launchpad, which is my bed, trampling my sensitive bits in the process, therefore I'm now all wook-up. This happens if there is the slightest sound that she can hear...

Silently The dobie, Grumbles goes into overdrive, and follows Scruffy with Zowie behind & Goolie-gone looking quizzically surprized brings up the rear...

Heaven alone can help when Scruffy get's to the intruder.... She has no problem in flying in on a full-on bite....

That pulles the trigger on the Dobie & the Swiss shepherd......Then it's a free for all.... Gooli-gone just looks on....

Happened once, an intruder made it over the 8' spiked front fence (used the wall between me & next door to clamber over)....

Big mistake..... The intruder finally made it over the same boundry wall into next door...

His pit-bull, already enraged by what been going on, took up where my lot left off......

Rather fun actually..

Lawer said "put up signs right now and take photos", you got 24H to make a report... Oh, take a photo of the docket.....

If you have to go to court, you have all the evidence.... & no "lost case file" will cause you to be charged as the judge will rule on evidence before him....

Nothing came of it though.... My neighbour said the fella exited his property over his back wall in a hellava hurry... Diddn't see the action with his pitti.....

Our post box is behind the front pallasaid... Aint nobody's gonna mess with it....😁
