Fires all around us here in the Reno area, and lots of new fires on So. Calif.  This near us is about 40K acres. Here is a picture of a Pyronato, a Tornado from a fire making it's own weather.  Will post some more photos later. s800-c85.jpg

That is a dramatic photo ED. Fire is bad enough but when it creates it's own weather like that things can get real scary in a hurry!
Hope your out of harms way and stay safe.

More fires much closer to me.  At least this, they have 30% containment, earlier saying into Sept.
Claremont Fire is visible from my bike ride this AM, 100-150 acres so far.  Pretty dramatic Monday morning watching the lightning and thunder.

I should mention the first picture is not mine, but from the internet news. Earlier in the same day I looked up from my back yard and saw this weird cumulus cloud and took my phone out for a picture, the one shown here. now I read it is called a pryocummulus cloud. One made from a big fire under the just right circumstances. It gives you an idea how close we are to the fire area, the fire at that time is about 20 miles line of sight from us. That night everything on the western horizon was glowing red/orange, at times showing raw flames I don't know how high in the area. It is burning dry grassland, Juniper trees and Sage brush.  It left one heck of an impression on Jane and I. We woke up and checked it out the bedroom window several times that night.

Apple Fire near Cherry Valley, CA started July 31st is now 95% contained @33,000 acres. This pic of the cloud was taken from my front yard looking N/E on August 1st. Distance 40 miles.

Here's a pic of the cloud from the Ranch 2 Fire near Azusa, CA which started August 13th. Pic taken from my front yard looking N/W  this past Saturday. Distance about 20 miles. This fire is now 20% contained @4300 acres.

I have the utmost respect for the Fire Fighters doing battle on the front lines. Fires are pretty bad all over the west right now and resources are stretched pretty thin. If it's this bad here in SoCal already I just cringe thinking what it's going to be like here in a month or so when the gusty Santa Ana Winds kick in.

Where I live we have two major fires going on, Glenwood springs canyon and the other 18 miles away from here, we have had two days of darkness and ash falling on Grand Junction due to the smoke.

PS Your picture at the start is Impressive, what camera are you using? The colors are incredible!

Can't sleep, squirrels will eat me....

If you need a Sun Flame Generator Model 100-107 ( for Sunflame lanterns models 105, 106, 107 and 110) give me a PM, I have close to 80 of those, 15 bucks each.

Yesterday morning there was hardly any smoke, I took a nap about noon with the swamp cooler running, omg, woke up and even in the house could tell there was a haze. The smoke was so thick it was blocking out the sun, except for all the red/orange color it looked like twilight outside, smoke was rolling in with differential density. I shut down the swamp cooler, closed the windows, and turned on the A/C. Going back to the sliding glass door, it looked like it was snowing, what the heck, it was ash flakes drifting down. It took hours to tone down the smoke smell in the house.

@Dan, yep, bummer on the air races, I think this is the first time they have been cancelled.

I want to add: Thank you all in the fire service!

I'm trying to stay focused, but it's pretty depressing!  I know things can ALWAYS be worse no matter the circumstances...  The San Francisco Bay Area is pretty much hemmed in by fires.  There's the SCU fire in the Diablo Mountain Range that's a monster: the sky is almost white from it.

Through earthquakes and fires there's still nowhere else I'd rather be than the Golden State.

Brother in East Quincy got evacuated yesterday Duane.  So far his house is still there but they had to cut a fire break right above it.  If the fire gets any closer, they are going to set the opposite side of fire break burning And push it up to the existing fire. Staying at friends house at Bucks Lake. On the opposite side of the valley, my sister near Esparto was put on notice but they seem to be getting a handle on that one.  Never known fire years as bad as the last few.

To help put things into perspective: the City of San Francisco is 47 square-miles.  The SCU fire which is in Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Joaquin, Stanislaus Counties is 583 square-miles.  The LNU is in Napa, Sonoma, Lake, Yolo, Solano Counties, is 580 square-miles... 😪

for those not in California, this is about the same picture 11 day’s later showing the smoke. Some days better some worse but over all bad unhealthy air quality lNU fire, the hills shown are about 6 miles. The fires have moved on from here but still about 50% containment

Brothers house was saved but only due to the brave firefighters who stayed in his yard and battled the flames until they passed by.  This was a selfless act as he lives at the end of a long winding road that they could have had the retreat cut off from.   I know a lot of people were not so lucky.

Ed, those yellow planes l think are Super Scoopers. We have a couple of them here in Southern Calif during the fire season. The "officials" lease them from Canada. They come at a premium but do a tremendous job and are highly effective.

The one has the Quebec flag on it.  Yeah, in British Columbia they are battling some decent fires (so says the news) but the priaries have mostly been spared this year so it is quite possible they are redeploying some of our water bombers down to help out.  Most people dont know just how massive our northern forests are so the prairie provinces have a decent size fire fighting capability.  They are incredible planes and incredible pilots.  Take care down there....thoughts and prayers.

Looking over the news this morning and came across this picture, the fury of it alone.

Aside from the horrific fires on the West coast, I read about one that wiped out a small town in Eastern Washington yesterday, said homes, business, everything gone in just a few hours.
