Recently acquired this Tilley R14 but I don’t have the TT /preheat cup. It’s a short reading lamp so not a lot of area to work with below.

I believe this may be familiar to a particular esteemed member. I feel fortunate to own it.

I am curious if there’s some home brew method of preheating a Tilley with a butane torch or .....?

Running to HD for the first time since mid March, hoping to light this soon. Picking up a gallon of DA and some of the fancy Kero.

Thank you!

Kevin

You know, I’ll lift the whole burner assembly, preheat, reattach BA, pump and light.
What could possibly go wrong?

See my avatar!

Thank you, sometimes I need to think out loud!

it helps a lot to preheat the BA as well . just take the globe off first

similarly , when i preheat a coleman i wave the torch over the generator , mixing chamber n burner tubes , if all these are preheated first there will be no burning man LOL of coarse we dont know the condition of the genny .... but lets say your using the original tilley pre heater  , its also pre heats the BA not just the genny

keep the torch slowly moving at all times .

My Tilley mantels were impossible to fit over the larger end of the Burner, so I cut down a peerless 24A which looks like it will work. An American mantle gave up its string for the bottom.
Despite initially sitting with pressure with no leaks as soon as I had it on fire it started dripping out the valve. This will need to be torn down. It had plenty of preheat as the socks weren’t dripping raw fuel, lol.

Plus side is the OL had put it on display in the dinning room. She likes it!

Note, this is not the time of year to be buying K1 at HD. It was up in the racks but they found it.

I’ll order some parts outta the UK now and do it right.

Thank you!

Oh my,
If your ordering parts from across the pond, go big or stay home.
This is gonna take a while and I’ll have some extra parts by the second week in September.
Thank you!

Unfortunately you have to heat up the mixing chamber also so you cannot just heat up the vaporizer and then slip it on oh, take a coat hanger make a little Fork at the end and wrap some cotton from a t-shirt around their dip it in your denatured alcohol and then put it around you shape around the vaporizer that'll get you out in the pinch but that flame has to go up on the vaporizer and in the mixing chamber, does that make sense

The only preheat cups I have are those funny looking Canadian ones off a 249?

Actually Pancho, those I do not have, just the 24* brass round ones. I could steal one off a 237 but not today!
Thank you!
Kevin

A piece of Tiki torch wick, some wire, and a seafood sauce bottle make a pretty useful universal preheat torch.IMG_20191201_003717.jpg

not sure that’s anywhere close to ideal with this lamp? Imagining multiple cycles. I do appreciate the suggestion tho, I’ve been meaning to make one but since I’m waiting for parts might as well get a torch or two.

@Pancholoco1911

I was staring at a waffle from yesterday for the 249. I don’t think I’d sell one of those horseshoe cups if I had one for less than the delivered price of that whole lantern.

Thank you!

Was joking 🙃 but I need one of those horseshoe cups for my 249. I have 4 Tilley appliances (3 lanterns and a r55 heater) all them have their torch and extra Lamp burner head for the heater like the one on your lamp. I’ve always wanted a lamp like yours or similar but they don’t pop up that often here.

If you want to test your lamp get a torch and preheat your generator I have done even without a mantle

It's Tilley model TL14 not R14. Probably from about WW2 era. Not a good idea to try to pre heat these with a blow torch. It will do the job but it can cost you a broken globe because there isn't much room between glass and generator and real period globes aren't cheap. I know Tilley mantles are a tight fit but "impossible" suggestst to me your Tilley mantles are the wrong type and designed for the slightly smaller burners for floodlights or maybe the X410 types. They are long obsolete now and getting harder to find. This burner wants part 164X or 164H mantles. ::Neil::
