Still doing my research on this one. Looks to be a Mo PAC (Missouri Pacific) rail switch light? A buddy of mine came walking in the shop an hour or so ago carrying it, and before I even said hello I asked him "how much!!" When friends find out you collect lanterns, you never know what's going to show up.

Here she is in all its filthy glory:

Unfortunately I believe the lenses to be replacements. They're not glass so I'm assuming some kind of plastic?... Not sure still researching. Will probably make some kind of wall mount or stand for it next. Thanks for looking.

Those are really cool, Toby. That looks nice all lit up again!

My Dad is a professional (certifiable, even) rail-fan and has a few different styles of those switch lights among his RR wickie collection.

I'll get a better picture of the burner when I get back to the shop after lunch...I think it was smooth... But not positive. It may not even be the original wick riser. These are Greek to me

A buddy of mine has a very similar signal light, made in Arlington NJ(no longer exists as a separate town).  His doesn't have a chimney either, yet burns clean.   I'd like to see the chimney on Steve's.   I'd add it to the list for the next rip to Leacock in Pa since they have a large selection of chimneys.

Here you go Steve, no prongs.. but maybe supposed to be?
IMG_20200806_123207_copy_967x1289.jpg   looks like 4 slots, possibly for prongs. Doesn't look like there would be much room for a very tall chimney when you slide the fount in it's spot.

I think you’re on the right track, Steve. Pun intended!

Here’s a couple picks I lifted off “the Google”. One is a Handlan oil pot, the other an Adams-Westlake.

I believe that's just another of the various styles of RR lanterns.  I've seen that particular style in both kero and battery powered versions, leading me to think they were a later model/series.

Your probably right. Other than the reflectors it looks identical to mine looking through other pictures on the ad. I kind of like it the way it is.

so to me it looks like the chimney holder may be a separate pice that drops down in the holes , dont know for sure . but often parts are missing on these oldies .

@JimL I believe that the switch lanterns were all kero until they switched in probably the 70s/80s. I’m not sure but I think that battery powered ones were just modified to be battery powered or powered with an electrical outlet for decorations use in a house. Just a guess though. If my grandad was still around, he could inform us all.

Kind of what I was wondering... Still not real sure where/how these were used. Were they at rail crossings? Or were they for the trains themselves... I know a local RR collector maybe he can enlighten me.

@Leviticus Tomethreus

I'm just going by what I saw at a RR collectors estate sale.  There were hundreds upon hundreds or RR wickies as well as other styles.  I could certainly be wrong, but the non-kero ones he had like that did not appear to me to be converted, and he had several of both types.

This estate sale would have ordinarily been a wickie collectors dream, but with higher than antique store retail prices, I believe the estate sale company kept over half of what was there.  I'm guessing to sell on ebay or in their own retail store.

@JimL By modified, I mean the wick part is chucked and an aftermarket battery box made by some company. If I ever go to my storage unit, I have one like this I can take a pic of.

I know exactly what you mean about conversions, but I didn't have the impression that the one or two I saw were converted.   He of course also had them in kero.
