Some people will complain about anything.   Give them an anonymous identity on the net, and there's no holding them back.   Many of these are the type of people that if they won millions in a lottery would complain  that they're only getting present value and not the full amount, and then complain about having to pay so much in taxes on this free money.

Fortunately, on the rare occasions that negative behavior is about to start on this forum, our excellent mods jump in and halt it.

I was once threatened with personal mutilation and death, complete with proof the guy knew my address, by a fellow member of a... photography board! I disagreed on a small point of wildlife photography etiquette. Cops were involved, arrest followed (I wasn't the only one threatened).

Yea, life's too short and negativity is just wasted energy.  I've heard that other forums can be a bit heated but since this is the only camp I visit, I never had the opportunity to experience it.

I quit one forum ten or so years ago, a Washington fishing site, I only visited once a month or so (I live in MT now). I opened a post and member were just RIPPING a new poster. I thought about contacting the moderator........but instead I sent a note to all the board sponsors I could find, letting them know that I would never visit said site again.
And I have not.

Just one of the positive characteristics of this forum is that newbies with little or no knowledge of GPA's are warmly welcomed and even the most basic questions are patiently answered. I think the considerate members and the watchful mods make this a great place to visit.

Agreed,  a GREAT forum.

On other forums, I've had people attack me and attempt to troll me. I have zero tolerance for trolls and I give them rope and let them get themselves banned.  On one forum it happened almost monthly the first year or so I was there.  Everyone else was good.  The tolls that weren't banned either left, or leaned to leave me or others alone.  (I won't tolerate trolling others either...)

Also been stalked once.  (By the moderator/owner of another forum!  The guy was crazy...)

The first time I was attacked many years and forums ago (For no reason at all)  the other members slammed the guy six ways from Sunday.  I stayed silent and pm'ed him and asked why?  It tuned out it was pure jealousy.  I had the answers he wished he had!  And he made up his mind I didn't know what I knew!   (Topic was primarily suspensions on lifted and altered 4WD's   - I leaned suspensions designing/building race cars and went to 4X4's after I retied form the race cars...)  Adfter we talked it over ,he calmed down and we were all good after that.  (So I don't go into "kill mode" on first contact with a troll;  I wait and be sure...)

I haven't had to fight trolls for a long time now, but I still remember how!

I don't miss trolls at all!  This place, the Garage Journal (I stay out of its "Free Parking" section generally...), the several groups I own or am a member of (mostly in Groups.io now), all have that in common.

No personal attacks allowed!

I don't miss that rubbish at all!

Interesting. I get threatened with death and mutilation on a professional photography forum, but have nothing but friends on the gun forum....

Yup, some forums have rather lax posting guidelines and ours are maybe a bit more restrictive yet we keep the conversation moving without allowing personal attacks and that makes this place a good one for me.

I've only had an issue with one member here. He was a know it all and I think that most of the veterans here know who I'm referring to. He was banned from here, twice. This is the only forum that I've ever been a member of and I really like it here. Lots of great folks and an unparalleled amount of knowledge. I don't feel a need to join any other forums.

Pirate 4X4 took the art of abusive behavior to new heights and extremes, and Newbies were violated at will.  I left them to their arrogance and devices long ago,

The one gun group I got involved with was for Thompson Contenders. A lot like this place, but it slowly faded away.

This is the first forum I ever joined and then later, I also joined the other GPA forum. Only good experiences on both. I've also bought from and sold to members here and have also had good experiences.

I've read some other forums and have seen how some people get treated there, so thanks to all who make this a good one.

Every forum has had its "prima donnas" who seem to think that their poo-poo didn't stink.  This one had what I called the Mini Mafia.  One would pounce and the rest would dog pile on.  I'm glad to say that I have not "heard" from any of them in a great while.  This forum is now much calmer and respectful of others with differing experience and views.  Thanks to those who exhibit calm, rationale minds as well as a touch of good humor.

I collect shotguns and enjoy reading information about shotguns. I belong to a couple related forums but find the higher the value of the collectables the more likely that snobbery and mean spirited behavior will occur.
It seems all here "enjoy" to laugh about ridiculous eBay or auction prices. Although I do enjoy seeing lots of sales between fellow collectors here.

I'm not a collector (although the missus might argue that point) and don't post often but you folks have been a great resource for keeping my old lanterns and stoves in great shape.  Thanks!!!  I frequent a few other boards geared towards molded fiberglass campers or off road exploring (not hard core rock crawling or mudding - now too old for that silliness).  None have quite the same feel as this one and a couple are right out of the old wild west - see post #24 and outlawmws' comment on Pirate 4x4.   Anyway, appreciate all the advice and tips available here with a little searching.
