Hey everyone! Decided to clean up my JC Higgins lantern that came in a haul of about 14 other lanterns. Super pleased with it, surprised how bright they are and really it isn't as loud as everyone makes them out to be. It had lots of crap in the fount and I had to replace the pump cup but overall it runs well. The 24A mantle is not getting along with it but I'll take it for now!

That is quite possibly the most beautiful transformation I have ever seen. How did you get the burner frame to look like that?

Thank you!! It honestly was more dirty than anything with just some surface rust on it and a little bit of pitting. I just soaked it in vinegar for a while and then cleaned it with super fine steel wool and mother mag polish

I hope I find a lantern that’s mostly just dirt someday.

Nice clean up! I don't see the green version very often.

Haha oh man the majority of my lanterns have needed a ton of cleanup and are usually not easy! The last few 335's were basically wiping down, polishing and didn't even need to remove the valves as they were hardly used but that's just being lucky! I've had a few with fount's that are totally shot as well. You win some you lose some 🙂

Thanks, Toby! It was interesting to work on a non-Coleman for once but its actually quite a well made lantern for being made in "British Hong Kong". I have no idea what year it might be. Somewhere in the 60's?

@Dvan95 man some of the lanterns that I got from my grandad were immensely bad. There was one 228E that my dad really wanted and it had not bottom on the fount because the rust had destroyed it.

not looking for any more Bday gpas. Honestly, if you have a 10-72 don’t let me know about it.

Pretty sure that those were made by Unimet. Union Metal Works. Sears was using the Thermos "mushroom" lanterns by the early 60's so these predate that but probably not by much. E.
