Mister Wilson
Last Friday at one of my pick up spots, I was given a very nice looking Canadian 4A iron to fix.  The store owner said the Amish lady told him that it lights and runs good, but the bottom doesn't get hot.  Hmmm, that's a first.  The only thing I could think of was that the burner slots might be plugged, but the iron didn't look like it had been used much, if at all.  Took it apart and sure enough, all the top slots that keep the generator hot were all clear.  Every one of the bottom slots were completely plugged with loose rust.  I thoroughly cleaned them, checked everything else, put it together and it starts and runs perfect.
I honestly believe this iron was unfired until the present owner tried.  The tank bung is still sealed with Gasoila, the stamped heat shield above the generator is still clean metal as is the bare steel plate under the plated top plate.  The wood handle is mint, never been scorched.  I have the owner's address, so I'm going to deliver it there so I can find out the back story.

Cool story John. Keep us posted on the history. I’ve only seen those irons in a display. Never seen one operate.

Nice that you got it up and running again, John.  You don’t see a whole lot of handles in mint condition.

Interesting story, John; like Mark said, rare to see those with decent handles, let alone like new.

I made a house call and delivered the iron today.  The lady was quite happy to have it, said her mother had one and she had always wanted one like it.  Turns out their driver spotted it at an antique store and bought it complete with the box, trivet, pump, filler can and literature.  The only thing missing was the slot cleaner! ðŸ˜  She plans to hand this one down to her daughter.
