Coast to Coast
Hello,
Just wondering if there is a good online source for identifying Coleman lamp shades.  I have the opportunity to buy some tomorrow locally.  Problem is, the guy has a lot of Aladdin and other brand lamps and shades too.  He has everything in boxes and totes.  He pulled out a couple today that he said he was certain are Coleman, but he did not have time to show me more.  He is going to did them out tonight.  The two  he identified as Coleman are white with hand painted flowers on them.  He may have called them bullseye pattern?   Most of what I have seen from Coleman looks like printed designs.  We’re they hand painted too?  Are the shades usually marked Coleman?  There are some shades I would recognize immediately, but I know some common ones like the peacock design is also done by Akron.  He also says he has some of the glass Coleman kerosene lamps as well as the quick light ones.  Any do’s or don’ts in buying one of those?  Any thoughts would be appreciated.  I feel like I am kind of going into this situation blind, but he is selling the stuff very reasonably, and this may be a good opportunity to buy my first lamp.
Thanks!

The shade book would come in handy about now. Some shades were used by other companies as well as coleman. But since time is limited, go to Terry Marsh's website and study what you can. Check out other companies while there. Could even have it on your phone to double check things. Good luck.

Thanks for the good advice.  Great idea to check out what is not Coleman.  I looked at my Coleman book and Terry Marsh’s site, as well as goggle images.  This is a picture of the style globe I believe I saw today.  Similar style painting on the same style globe, except the globe was solid gloss white.

Do not think that is coleman according to the shade book. But there are some hand painted shades that are Coleman.

Thats a great link.  Thank you.  In that write up Steve mentions  Darcy working on a guide to lamp shades.   I noticed that is from 2012...before I started this hobby.  Id that guide published?

Yes, the shade book was published.  I bought mine in Las Cruces.  And saw some in Bozeman.

I’m not sure whose table they were on at the convention but I did consider buying one as a spare.  Someone might chime in that knows how to glom onto one.
I took a ton of pictures at the convention.  Maybe I can spot them in one of the images and determine whom to contact.

They are basically sold out. Darcy was selling a few she had left at the convention.

Thanks everyone.  My lead turned out to be a bust.  When I got there the man said he forgot to look for the Coleman items last night.  He did not have time to look today, but he showed me some Aladdin stuff.  Apparently he was a big Aladdin Dealer back in the day and still has tons of it.  He said what Coleman items he  has were only purchased because they were shades on an Aladdin or lamps with Aladdin lamps.  Said he used to not be able to give Coleman stuff away back In day.  Thought it was junk.  So I guess it is buried deep in stacks of boxes.  He let me go through some parts boxes and Aladdin chimneys, in case there was one marked Coleman.   I left with seven packs of later silk-lite mantles with thorium.  Not empty handed at least.

He took my number and said he would dig the stuff out someday and give me a call, but I am not holding my breath.  He seems pretty forgetful.  If I do get back in there I will let you know.  It did not sound like he wanted to sell any of his good Aladdin lamps or shades, but I believe he would let parts go.
