Been watching a Christmas 200 on eBay. I knew they were worth a fair amount, but I've never seen one go this high.

Any ideas from the hardcore collectors on why it would be so high? Is it the box? Is it because it's fairly clean? Is it the collectors in Japan and are they crazy?

Bad etiquette to post live auctions.

I understand the rules BUT I do not really understand why that is?  What does it hurt?  It doesn't really effect me as I don't buy or sell from that site but I just don't understand that etiquette rule?  Just curious.

That's kinda' walking into the "ridiculously high" exclusion there.

Rule is there for those who might be bidding on the item, but once it goes into the stratosphere, it's fair game.

I've yet to find one, so I'd have to say they are rare where I live. $920 rare? I don't think so.
It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.

It effects others that are bidding as they might be members here with active bids. Drawing more attention by posting to a forum that collects lanterns, might raise the end price of the auction. To answer your question, the Asian buyers snatch up many collectible white gas items. Also, sometimes newbie bidders will add to their bidding amount just to stay in the top position, throughout the auction timeline. Hard to say which is which in this case? Finding an unused lantern in the original box is also a draw to many collectors..campinut..

I look at ePay daily for the past 8-10 months, and since the whole stay at home, free money, nothing to do covid started I've noticed prices on commons have doubled. Anything remotely popular (Christmas, goldbond, Burg's, on and on,) have tripled+. Odd thing is you can still pick up nearly 100 year old stuff for about the same as always... Strange times we're living in. Good time to be a seller ðŸ˜

Now is not the time to buy a red globe! I’m surprised at what tickles new collectors like me. Some of it I just don’t get!
I see your point on the 90-100 year old stuff. Hard to buy parts when you can get a lantern maybe needing parts!
😳
Thank you

The mods don't make up rules out of the air, but have learned from past experiences.  In addition to what Russ (campinut) wrote, there are folks who can't be bothered to join us in discussion but will lurk and when they see a deal posted, jump on it before an active member of this forum has the opportunity.  In addition, this forum does not allow valuations.  Some people in the past have joined just to get a value to then go sell on ebay.

The only depreciation prices I saw was when we entered in this pandemic (April/March) saw gold bonds for $300’s and Christmas for $80 to $120, 243’s as low as $60. Had some funds at that time to grab a few of those succulent pieces but times were unknown

That one is actually a 200A Christmas lantern not a 1-51 200 (only about 6 of them known of amongst the forum members) or a 4-51 200 Christmas lantern that regularly brings $400 plus on eBay. It’s just a really clean 11-51
200A Christmas lantern, I just don’t understand it 😁

it is of course, an auction. We post Ron Strickler's auctions here all the time.
If you want to win the auction, be the highest bidder. When the auction ends, not one week before.
We used to try and fix auctions here. (the "do not bid against" list) That's against the rules and ebay very effectively put a stop to it.
The seller I'm sure does not mind us posting live auctions.

John, I should rephrase that, there are only about 6 CCF members that admit to owning a 1-51 Christmas lantern. I suppose many more do own one and there are many serious Coleman collectors that aren’t active on the forum.
