I got a lot at an auction, and within it was a latern from the 40s and one from the 70s.  They were in a garage and covered in dust.  What is the best way to clean these?  Water?  Also and water?  Dry cloth?

Soap and water or simple green works good. Is your lantern from the 40s painted or nickel fount?

Looks like the top is painted green and the bottom is silver... But I'm not sure if it's silver because the paint got bleached out by the sun or if that's the color.  The glass on top has "Coleman" and Made in USA.

Agreed with posting pictures. You may have to go to the how to section to learn how. Pictures will have to be 320kb or smaller in size. Be careful with that globe!

I'm also a fan of Simple Green, but use caution as it WILL eat paint. Especially as Coleman paints are not noted for being durable.  (If the paint color is coming off on a paper towel, rinse and stop using the SG...)

For painted Coleman stuff Dawn dish washing soap is had to beat for cutting dirt safely.

I (and others) have recently been having stellar performance with a product called Greze-Off,

That nickel 242C is the pick if the litter. Looks to be in great shape too! Lots of info on here for polishing nickel. Key is nothing too aggressive. I personally use oven cleaner with 0000 steel wool to clean, then mother's mag polish or buffing compound to polish. Don't get any waxes or oils on your vent. It is porcelain and when fired will oxidize and will be impossible to fix. I just degrease them good then wash and dry. Nice lantern👍

My phone is android, my husband has an Apple phone.  Here are more pics.
I'm hoping to re-sell so I wanted to clean it to make more presentable.  I don't think I'll even try waxing it, I would hate to ruin it.  It is really cool!

Thank you for all your help.  Hopefully I'll have it on the Buy/sell page tomorrow.

That 242C is in fine condition! The vents (hats) on these tend to get trashed as they run very hot.

I think you'll make someone very happy with that one. Not cleaning it is probably the best bet here, as most of us enjoy the work.
It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.
