So I have a dilemma: out of display space for my collection.  I have plenty of space to store them, but no more to nicely display them.  Fun to have lanterns, but not just to sit outside in the barn collecting dust.  Thus far I have built shelves around the home office and set them in there.

What have you all done to display your lanterns?  Looking in particular for new and creative ways to nicely showcase lanterns without allowing them to consume the house.  Show us what you've done.

The second part of this is to get some pictures of peoples' collections on here.  Most I know enjoy seeing pictures of others' collections.

You have enough VERY nice lanterns.  You can stop now.  [wink]

Really, I don't know.  We have as much space as we have, and that's it.  I have mine
hanging from the ceiling in my man-room.  About 45 of them.  The rest have to go in
the shed.  Hanging them lets me use the whole floorspace of the room, since the
ceiling is the same size as the floor, but it is not as nice as the way you display them,
that's for sure.

I had a little bit of dead space in the middle of my house, next to the furnace pipe. I was able to fit this into the wall while I was remodeling my living room. I am planning on putting in some display area in the kitchen/dining room when I get around to my next remodeling project. That area will probably have a few single burner stoves and cast iron in it. lantern shelf.jpg

OK so just updated my pictures. SHMBO does not allow any of my stuff upstairs, so it has its own SMALL room in the basement, which is overcrowed, but at least its in the house. I don't have a row of stoves like Roland, so the 1's I do have are being displayed in the open position, I have about 7 more to finish and fit along the bottom below the lanterns, hard to get back far enough so there is stuff on top of the  shelves that you can't see, I also want to make a better display for my irons, anyhow  enjoy

Sounds like I'm in some sort of trouble.

I hang my measly-by-these-standards 35 lantern collection on hooks from the ceiling in my garage. Stoves go on a shelf over my workbench. Jealously follows me around like a puppy.

I only have 9 lanterns and three stoves, two lanterns stay in the teardrop, three in the garage and four around the fireplace on the living room, all of them are users, so I rotate them around.
Can't sleep, squirrels will eat me....

If you need a Sun Flame Generator Model 100-107 ( for Sunflame lanterns models 105, 106, 107 and 110) give me a PM, I have close to 80 of those, 15 bucks each.

Being in the workshop is a problem Mike.  The solution is not to use the power tools any more.  It doesn't always work out that way though.  :-(

My thought is to run a shelf around the living room, 12" deep and at the hight of the doors and window trim. Also tuck an LED rope light in the back for a little mood lighting. Will post pics when I get it finished.

Glad you started this thread.  Sorry I don't have any good pictures to share.  I do have some displayed in my office in WV.

Will, nice millwork! I agree thank you for starting this thread. I like the idea of the rope lights but I would put them in front of the lanterns hanging from the bottom of the shelf above to light the lanterns below. Not sure that makes sense .. Sort of like under cabinet lighting in the kitchen.

Roland, I would explore plastic drop sheets you could roll down and cover the lot when you work in the shop. Something you could clip on the front of the shelves.....

very nice. I'm also a bit surprised there doesn't seem to be much cross collecting, like mixing coleman with coke or petro signs or something.

I really don't have them on display yet but they are all in the house. I have some on top of the entertainment center some on the top shell of the bakers rack / coffee bar in the kitchen and the rest in the rec-room. I store my extra globes on top of our 49 bottle wine rack.( if it can hold all the weight from the wine what's a few more globes?) The are stacked neatly in the rec. room. I also have stoves and lanterns that live in the camper full time. Eventually all will be hanging in the living room and rec-room. Plus one hanging in each of the 12 rooms in my house for power outage reasons.

I only bring up 2 at a time and put them on the mantle.  The rest are hung on rafters downstairs or are on shelves.  Right now I have the 236 that Russ gave me a Peerles mantle, the one I used down at Bubba's place.

Evidently, my wife does not see what I see in a lantern.

I am finding now, I cherish lanterns more for what they MEAN, from people that I got them from, than sheer numbers.  That having a hoard means less.  Understand?  Probably because I don't have the money to buy a hoard, and I just don't see that many anyway.

242B 1950 Canadian gifted from pintofhooky went to Bubba's probalby my favorite, and I cart it all over the US.

OK, guess I'll post a couple pictures of my lanterns etc.  Been doing this for awhile but have not been very active for the last 5 years or so.  Time to get my Coleman excitement up.  The lanterns take up very little space as they all sit on a 1x12 cedar shelf.  Of course, I have a few dozen more scattered around the house.  The photo of the frames are old Coleman ads from newspapers and magazines that line the stairway to the basement.  I will add one more pic in the next post since this is all it would let me download.

I put up this shelf just a couple of months ago. Not really for display, but more for storage. The shelf is now filled with just the go and get it lanterns. They're always fueled and ready to go.  I have three others, sorry no pic, in the house on a three level flower stand. A 242, a 236, and a 243. They are basically a nice display and also my first responders. The other good, and working, lanterns are in individual cases.

You guys have some amazing collections. Just pray every day you don't have an earthquake.
