Got this PM from a member and don't understand. I know his problem.  A few years ago he did me a favor.  Some time later I bought out a collection for close to $20K and was selling birthday 200A cheaper than they were going for on eBay.  He asked about a super clean one and I gave a price and he was offended.  When I realized he had done the favor I discounted it even more but I guess I should have given it to him but I was trying to get some of the investment back. Took about 3 years to break even.

So if I have done someone wrong please explain.

Message I got:

Warren,  the old saying goes here - “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”

Some people get a preconceived notion of what is "due them" -  it has no relationship to reality.  Just ignore it and don't sweat the small stuff.

Well, I don’t see what’s wrong. I mean if I were said guy, I wouldn’t expect you to remember a favor I did some time ago. This is how it would’ve gone for me.
(warren): blah blah blah price

(me): Man that’s good expensive.

(warren): It’s already cheaper than the stuff on Le bay.

(me): Remember that favor I pulled?

(warren): alright alright, I’ll give you another discount.

(me): alright, I’ll take it. Pleasure doing business warren.

Like I said, I don’t see any problem with what you did or really didn’t do.

When your shelling out big numbers like 20 grand for a collection you best have a business like approach to it so you don't loose your a $$. If they don't like that they can move on down the road.
I have purchased from you before Warren . Complete lanterns and parts. Always felt like you treated me fairly. You once sent me a 600 dollar lantern before I even paid for it.

Warren,
I've dealt with you for years and never had any bad feelings about our transactions, on many occasions you have sent stuff out and asked for money at a later date, despite me being over the pond you trusted me from the outset, those are not the actions of a fake or a shyster, it seems the guy in question has some personal issues to work through and is venting at whatever is handy.

Two years ago my wife and I were driving in Canada from Baniff up to Darrel's (Ironman) place north east of Edmonton to visit and meet him and his wife. We took our time to see all the sights along the way and called into every antique shop we came across to find some Canadian gpas. We found nothing in about 12 shops, ziltz. The people running the shops told us that a tall thin American guy and his wife were there yesterday and had bought all their lamps, lanterns ect.
This happened at every shop we visited, and I told my wife I would love to catch up with him to see all the goodies he had collected and we had missed out on.

Well we did catchup to him at Darrel's place, and it was Warren.
I told Waren about our trip and not finding any gpas in the antique stores along the way and we all had a good laugh about it, as we had both taken the same route to Darrel's a day apart.
Warren had unloaded all his finds he had picked up and had them spread out in Darrels garage. There were lots of very nice finds.
Then Waren said to me "pick what you want out of what is there and you can have them for what I paid for them".
There was nothing there that I really wanted so I passed, but I was very impressed with his generous offer.

Warren, you are no shyster or fake, mate, you are a bloody good bloke, and a very generous person. So don't let this person get under your skin.

Keith.

Wow!  Not what I've experienced at all.

Warren, I've been nothing but pleased with our dealings.  You've always  gone out of your way to find me the best parts, and ship them as cheaply as possible.  You offered to pay for parts I make, but they were simple pieces, and I was happy to send them as a gift.  When you got them you sent me a message saying to remind you that you owed me a favor.  A month later I asked how the parts I made were working, and you, without hesitation and most generously sent me something that I would've been happy to have paid for.  A gift for a gift.

Some people don't communicate well on the internet.  You're not one of those people.  Our dealings have been nothing but professional and friendly and I look forward to dealing with you in the future.

I’ve bought things from you over the years. All good transactions. I also bought my Birthday 200A from you out of the collection you mentioned in this thread. It is in like-new condition. Of course it was above the average 200A price. We all know what lanterns are worth here.
The Covid situation we’re all in has brought out a lot of hate and short tempers. I’m not making excuses for the rude response you got.
Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to finally find and buy my Birthday lantern at the right price!

I was curious how someone could make a statement about "how you treat people here on CCF" when nearly all of our dealings after the initial "I'll take it!" have been via PM.  Like I said, some people can't communicate well on the internet... or in person.  Not your problem.  I hope that the sender reads this thread with an open mind and learns from it.

A couple of friends and I the other day were just talking about these kind of people, though in the context of grumpy neighbors, in that there are folks who are constantly miserable and who can not and never will be happy.  They will always find fault or a problem with anything and everything and every one and gripe and complain constantly.  As had been said, you can't please everyone all the time.  I like the advice from Pastor Jeff's German grandpa: "You can please some of the people and tell the rest where to get off."

In this forum the dodgy characters are exposed pretty quickly and Warren sure isn't one of them.

You helped me out with a valve for my slant a while ago. I was a greenhorn to this hobby (still am) and you asked me how much I thought it was worth. You sold it to me for a lot less than I quoted you. You could have taken my offer and I still would have been happy, but you didn't. I appreciated how you helped me get what has become one of my favorites going. This doesn't sound like actions of a person who is trying to take advantage of others. I wouldn't let the comment get to you too much.

I liked a quote from the TV series "Justified," when Waylon commented on someone calling him an a$$hole.  He said his daddy told him,"If you meet an AH and the rest of the day goes well, you met an AH.  If you run in to AH's all day long, you're the AH!"  I presume that person meets folks all day long he has a problem with.

I have never had a problem with anyone on this forum.  I have bought items from several members, including Warren.  All have been fair.  Warren has gone the extra mile several times for me.  I am in Oklahoma, but bought a Model 5 heater from Warren and he delivered it to Atlanta where I had a friend passing through and picked it up for me.  Talk about going the extra mile!  Still, I know it makes you wonder why someone would say such things about you, but for me, the man in the mirror is who I have to live with and live up to.  From my experience with Warren, I think he has an excellent reflection!

Thank you all.  I really do want to know if anyone feels taken advantage of as I'd like to make it right.   You all have made me feel better.

I've blocked the sender, so will not have to worry about them in the future.

Someone asked if it was friendship or business.  This was a 490 heater (pretty rare) that is still in my collection so wasn't a business/flip deal.  I actually want to get this set up to use in my house in case of an ice storm takes out power here in the mountains as we could be without power for days.  I only know of 3 of these.  This was the first one I found, then I found a second one and @CrazyCamperGreg has that one, and the third one is being stored in MN (thanks to @MNfarmer) until I can get there to get it.  Would have been this summer but you know how 2020 went!.

Issues within the "cargo cult". Did you pay a fair market price for the 490 heater? If so, fair market pricing for the lantern would be expected. If the heater was a "gift", then square the deal by giving the heater back or "gifting" the lantern. I suspect you want the heater more than the lantern. Hobby heaters and lanterns really don't amount to much in the big scheme of things, especially if they are going to be disruptive.
