One of the many treasures I got with the auction Lots was this Coleman Protect A Lite on a brass finish CQ.  Unfortunately the packers at UPS didn't protect items that could be bent or crushed some like this screen.  Ever repair window screens?  This may keep bugs out, but I think is going to be hard to bend the brass screen back in place and fix this one area.

You can do it.  Baseball bat as a forming aid maybe.  And now that you have one you can reverse engineer it and build another one.  Bugs won't care that it's not genuine Coleman.

I have not played with the screen, my next project is this lamp.  Screen doesn't seem to want to play very well.  The vintage Nulite lamps are next, may not get to them for a couple weeks.

Really nice item there, Duane, but what a shame that, once again, items are poorly packed and damaged.
Seems these auctions are more like a roll of the dice; win something nice, MAYBE it will arrive in decent shape.

I only saw one post by Steve when I searched.  Had some luck last night improving the shape, will be hard if even possible to stuff the screen back under the edge.  Will keep big bugs out.  Waiting for a shade to show up, dang USPS.

Poking on it last night, I think more damage would be done trying to open up the edge trim so the screen could be stuffed back in it.

Have you tried a small putty knife or butter knife?

Nice find,
If the screen is brass, maybe a little heat will anneal it enough to be able to work it into the band.
good luck,

Hey Duane, been there and tried to replace the screen.
I received this 333 with a hole and the screen pulling out of the holder.

I thought I try and replace the screen so I cut the old screen off and used putty knives to separate the two pieces.

Opened up the outer ring and tried numerous pieces of metal screen of different diameters and would try to work the screen in, crimping as I went.  I got close once but the screen would keep popping out.  Very frustrating!

Went on a hunt for those screened plate covers to keep flies off the grub.  Had a magnet with me to verify that it was a metal screen under the plastic coating.

Burned off the plastic coating in the camp fire.

Reattached the holder and this is how it turned out.

Not quite right but it works for me.

i have always been intrigued by this Coat , the craftsmanship is fantastic all made from metal screen and a little solder ...... is it a salesman sample ? a screen store advertisment or what ? who would make a coat from metal screen ? its pretty cool just to look at the work involved .

I need to look at tooling at my landlords spinning shop.

Spinning brass screen for these could be interesting.

I frighten easily!

My current shade is Coleman!!

To me a lamp without a shade is creepy!

well , thats not a coleman shade :-) but truth is it doesnt fit too many coleman shades as snug as we would like . i tried several and found one that it fit real good so thats where it stayed

but it looks like you fixed the screen ?

that shade looks a bit like a coleman 329 but its not . is this it ?

Gotta start getting a few shades.  Will need to consult the ICCC book and Darcy's book.
