Ridge Runner

Headed out with my brother this morning to meet up with another local member/collector and look at some pieces that he was interested in selling. Had a great time and ended up leaving with two beautiful pieces to add to my collection. A 2-‘78 639 CPR and a 3-‘89 286A.

On our way home we stopped at a Dunkin Donuts. Across the street there was an outdoor tag sale going on at an old gas station. Looked like it might be promising so we took a stroll over. Lots of old random junk. But, in the midst of everything was this little gem from 10-‘73.

All the paperwork was in the box, accessory safe was on the lantern with the mantles, generator and wrench inside.

Also got the 242 frame for my parts stash.

Seemed like a good kick off to the weekend! Hope you folks are having a good one, and thanks for looking.

Awesome score. I'd love to find some Sears mantles to go with my Sears lantern. Congrats on a good day of hunting.

Thanks, fellas!

@hikerduane the 200A was from a “mobile” tag sale guy that was set up in a closed gas station lot. The other two pieces came from a member here that happens to be a few towns away from me.

Finding that 200A was a nice score. You always have to stop and look, you never know what you might find. The CPR and 286A are very nice and a good add to your collection. Nice to meet a local member and chat for a while. All and all a good day!

I dove right in and got the 639 going first. It's only my second 500CP lantern, but I haven't yet lit my 236 so I was pretty excited to see what these things can do. After oiling the leather, adding some CF and snugging up a wee drip from the valve packing it was ready to go. A little DNA in the preheat cup and we have ignition.

IMG_5799.jpg

And lift-off!

IMG_5801.jpg

Man, this big dog is BRIGHT!

IMG_5803.jpg

At some point I'd like to try burning kero just to see the difference, but I also want to go easy on the vent, so I'll likely run CF in it otherwise.

Caught a cool mantle shot throttling it a bit with the pricker. You can just make out some of the printing and the sunrise logo, might have been better if it was actually dark out.

 IMG_5804.jpg

The 200A just needed some oil on the leather. It had a half-fount full of CF; clean, but it smelled really old. I don't think it has run in decades but that didn't stop it from waking right up without a fuss.

IMG_5798.jpg

Didn't have time to try out the 286A, but I'm 100% sure it just needs fuel. Hopefully this weekend I'll have some time to get it fired up.

Thanks again for looking!

First of all, what is that lantern, I need one now. Second, I’m having a great Friday. Parents took me to IHOP for breakfast. I’d light a lantern, but I have like no cf left.
My friends don’t call me “Lantern Levi” for nothin’,
if they did call me that.

Now that you mention it, I could go for some pancakes!

The lil red adjustable is a 286A. Basically the 286 was the successor to the 200A. This particular one a little later in production and was offered in a pleasing burgundy-ish red.

Are the red ones rare? I can’t find any in the bay, which usually means it’s rare

I don’t exactly know if it’s considered rare. But it was only made in red for a couple years so not as prevalent as its green sibling.
