Please excuse the lack of a picture, my kids are busy with Mother's Day activities. This morning I snagged a 228B at a garage sale. At least I think it's a B, the original box says "228B" on it. There is nothing stamped on the side of the fount, no Coleman logo or numbers. A quick check of the dirty air tubes didn't turn up patent dates, but they are soot- covered. The bail is attached with cotter pins. And, the bottom of the fount does have the Coleman logo, with the word "and" in-between "Coleman" and "Company". It also has a screw on air pump cap. My search of past posts makes me guess the lantern was made 1933-1935. Am I close?

See if you can find just the letter B stamped on the bottom usually along the edge in between words and does it say insta lite

I can't find a B anywhere on the bottom of the fount, and it doesn't say Insta Lite. I saw in a post where they mention a keyhole on the frame, I'm assuming that's the holes for the bail. The bail holes on my lantern are round.

Thanks, Dave. That's the post that caused me to make my guess as to the manufacture date. So, probably a 1935 or thereabouts.

Agostino DelCoro suggests, if I remember right, that the vent changed at 11/35 - from the smaller-than-frame to the "later" version that stuck around... til the end of the E?
It should be dated on the bottom of the fount: generally, but not always, (year) - (month) where (year) is a single digit.

The 220B vent from brimless to brim was earlier than ‘35. But this is a 228B so that won’t help. 😂

Look at the seam on the collar. Folded was
early, spot welded later. Your lantern is 1935-40 most likely and with a spot welded collar seam, I’d say 1937-40.

I thought he could ask the lantern and see if it grew up with brimless siblings?...  ok, I have no excuse... oops...
