Hi Frank, the letter is the Coleman identification of a fount certain size, shape, and design.
A second letter now identifies the burner type.
The first Quick Lite “Q” lamp as designated in the beginning from August 1916 documented with the M fount, then in the first months of 1917 the “Q” lamp had a new C fount before April/May 1917, when after that date was given the “CQ” official designation. There are some burner component design differences between the C fount “Q” and the “CQ” designation lamps including mixing chamber and longer burner tubes. The earliest are also found with round fuel/ air plug.
