This lantern belonged to my grandfather. His name is engraved on it as is Sheldon Coleman’s name. What can you tell me about it? Are they rare and does it have value?

Welcome to the forum.
Note values are not given here.
I would suspect it's a family treasure. Me thinks you should cherish it forever!
Thank you!

I frighten easily!

My current shade is Coleman!!

To me a lamp without a shade is creepy!

Thanks. I was more interested in how many were made. I don’t know anything about it. Does it operate on kerosene

Lots of them were made, not many were company presentation lanterns. We collectors would see that as a great family heirloom - but I suppose a non-collector may not feel that tug. The bail has been bent into a round shape, it didn't come that way originally.

Welcome Brendan!

No, this operates on Coleman Fuel or white gas.  I’ve been around here for 6 years and have seen less than a dozen of those presentation 202s shown here.

That is a beauty and you should hang on to it even if you don't collect! Lots of good info on here about rebuilding 200 series lanterns and cleaning them up, which that will clean up nicely! You can use #21 mantles which can be found at most stores who sell camping goods. Welcome online 🙂

Can you show a closeup of the engraving? That would be interesting to see.

Your grandfather either worked and retired from Coleman, was a friend of Sheldon's or was some prominent person that Sheldon wanted to honor.  As far as I know those were only made for people that fell into one of those categories.  They are few and far between.  Nice to see someone who actually has a family connection to one of them show up on here.

I have several of them, both black vent and green.  Like the others have said, what does the engraving say on the side of the fount?  That will give a clue as to what kind of presentation lantern it is.

I had no idea it was rare. It has been downstairs for years. I took pictures of the engraving but it is hard to read with the flash. It says LOWELL E FARLEY. Pittsburgh PA. Sheldon Coleman

You can get better pictures with the flash off, in a bright ambient light situation.

Turn your phone sideways when you take the picture.

That’s a nice heirloom piece!

Thank you

Nice lantern. Definitely hold on to it. Is there anyone in your family that might know the story of how your grandpa got the lantern. We definitely enjoy a good story here.

Welcome from North Central Indiana. Regardless of any possible value, that lantern should remain in your family.
