Went to the annual Boy Scout troop rummage sale this morning and was happy to find this 242B with the original box. I was even happier when I read the shipping info on the side of the box "H.E. Wyman State Forest Ranger Davis Calif." Got even happier when I pulled it out and saw the CDF (California Department of Forestry) stenciled on the fount plus the hang tag, some Kamplite mantles, and a wrench in the box.

I can't read the year as the coating is too thick. I see a "1" for the month. Did a quick search for H.E. Wyman and found something from July 1936.

I think the green-painted founts began in '41, but not 100% sure. '36 was nickel-plated.

Ironic to find it when the state is burning up and CDF (now Cal Fire) is strapped to the gills fighting many hundreds of thousands of acres of burns across the state. The air quality index at my house has to be pushing 300 right now. I just checked and it's over 600 in Quincy right now, up by Hiker Duane.

Yes, the collar is stamped 242B. It doesn't look like it was used much. The vent is perfect.

Congrats on an epic score!  I love branded lanterns.  I got this one from a local collector in a trade a while back...

I'd guess '41.  The fact that it's a painted B makes it even better.

Not sure? Perhaps the CDF region it was sent to? Maybe Camino-Placerville, which is where I live? That is only about 60 miles from Davis. Since it was found locally, that would make sense.

Is the body of the fount brass or steel?  That may help narrow the dates?

Brass.

So by '42 most industry was switching away from brass wherever possible.  Narrows it considerably.

Thanks. Wish I could read the year, but just can't see it. The "1" for the month is crisp though. I figure it will be 80 before too long. Amazing a box can last that long.
