I picked up a 275 with bent fount. Tried to bend it back with a vice but it was still significantly crooked. The bung is nearly creased on one side.  I got a schrader valve cap and filled the fount with near boiling water. Then pressurized it to 120psi. The result was a nicely bulged bottom. It won't even sit flat anymore. The bent bung was only slightly improved if at all. It still holds pressure to my surprise.

Is this fount toast? Is there any way to repair the bulge?
Did I use to much air pressure? Seems like it should be able to take 120psi.

To me it sounds compromised. I would get a replacement fount because they are not rare or anything.

I was able to find a parts lantern last night for pretty cheap on fleecebay so I will save it with enough left over to build another possibly. Would need another fount for that tho. I really like the 275s.

Just out of curiosity, I'd like to see what happens if you try to push the bottom back down.  How much pressure will it take?  Can you set it in a sand box and step in the center of the bottom to press it in?  Or do you have to jack up a car and set a tire down on it?

Maybe just glue some little feet under the bottom at the edge or along the edge so the lantern sits on these instead of the rounded center of the bottom. Or maybe slit a piece of rubber tubing and put the bottom edge in the slit around the bottom and glue to raise the center bottom off of the sitting surface.

At least you had the fount filled with water, so your life wasn't in danger going to such a high pressure.  The max pressure these operate at is 30 to 40 PSI tops with the built-in pump, cranking up the pressure by three to four times on an old fount that's now weakened by heat, I'm a bit surprised it didn't spring a leak or burst.

Flammable liquids, open flame, what could go wrong?

I feel pretty dumb for ruining it.

I do like the feet idea. I could make a snap on plastic base with the 3d printer to just keep it from wobbling.

For the fount to bulge, I would personally consider it compromised.  Although it may be safe for now, I'd have a fire extinguisher handy during use.  Or better yet, just get a replacement fount from John.  Controlled fire is OK, it's the thought if an uncontrolled fire that make me nervous.

Yeah if it's bulged I wouldn't take a chance on using it. I think it's an accident waiting to happen.

No need to feel dumb. It's a learning experience.

And it's a 275. There are tons of those around.
