My lantern of dreams has been a  early USFS embossed lantern. Well today I had to have tires put on the ole Silverado. The waiting area was full due to COVID there were no chairs. So i decided to go down our small town Main Street to a music shop and then proceeded to a antique store I haven’t been in This summer. The owner came up and asked if I was looking for anything and I give my Coleman stuff answer. He then light up and takes me to a glass display case and there I see the red and green beauty with a $20 price tag. I said I’ll take it before he Had the case open. It’s a early AGM embossed USFS with what I believe are inventory or inspection dates on the bottom the earliest is 48. The bitter part is it has the famous AGM stress cracks. The owner asked what the what the letters stood for so I told him United States Forest Service and we had a great conversation about  the stress cracks and my collection. He is going to bring in a 3 burner stove for me next weekend. Well I find a couple more things and check out he knocks of three more bucks off due to the cracks. So $17 for this beautiful display piece . I even got the misses to allow this one inside. I believe I am going to do a soft battery powered electrocution on it. I do need some of you AGM experts to tell what model and possible age. I think it would have to be 48 or older thanks for looking friends.🙂9E8D5523-21CA-4379-83C7-198A58D37B50.jpeg  2686B272-0904-4BED-9560-BF96B9B75844.jpeg  94E9A24A-A36D-489E-980A-EB32F12A4AB3.jpeg

That's a shame about the cracks, but it's a great looking lantern, I haven't seen an AGM USFS'S before.
Looks good inside!

Very cool lantern. Nice color too.  I have heard that those initials and years on the bottom could be the forester it was issued to for the year.  I have seen on the bottom multiple initials and years.  Someone with more knowledge than me can chime in if thats correct.

Excellent!  I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone post about an embossed AGM before. That’s pretty special, and for that price...

Thanks everybody. You are all right I was very blessed to find it All. I will post. Pics when I get some lights in it. I did find one on Terry’s website. They are a 287 with a different valve and burner likely from the early 30s. So I definitely got a early embossed USFS. The hunt continues as I would not have it any other way😀

Great score from the mountains of Virginia  ?  Unusual for one to surface in the Eastern US.

I was watching a WWII show and they were talking about self sealing fuel tanks in fighter aircraft and I thought  great idea .  I wonder if that would work on AGM fuel tanks.

Yes for sure. we do have several national forest around. But not huge like some out west. I am hoping a method to seal these will come up some day is the reason I am not drilling the fount for my electrocution of it. Still just blown away even finding it 😁
