Bear Fire which is part of the North Complex here in N California, blew up big time on Tuesday AM if you missed the news.  Went from under 50,000 acres to almost 250,000 in a few hours.  Started close to me, having a bigger effect on communities far removed from the original foot print.  Stay safe.  Under Evacuation Advisory here.  Two neighbors have left, no barking dogs now.

Did you happen to do anything with the sprinklers like we discussed last fall?

If nothing else get a standalone rain bird on top of your mobile home setup and leave it running when you leave?

Outlaw,
All my buildings have metal rooves, so not too worried about a fired starting at the top, comp shingles under the steel.  Have the yard raked up and wet down.  I have a list of what to load up.  Some helicopter activity this afternoon, but not a concern at the moment.  I can peddle down the road and have a great view where the fire was.

Just read a story about a couple camping at about halfway down the ridge road and got trapped.  They ended up surviving by taking their sleeping bags under a bridge and hiding in the water.  Lost their vehicle and gear but were happy to survive.

Power came back on last night before dinner.  Thank you for the thoughts.
Moved my expensive bear resistant garbage can to the front of my garage, so this AM before 4, Repo was barking, woke me up, the noise of the can hitting the concrete I knew was a bear, so had to dash outside to chase off the bear.  Makes 7 we have seen this year.

I am sure you will have more.  No doubt all the fires up there and loss of habitat have pushed more into the residential areas.  It is a good thing you were up-canyon from the fire.  I don't think most people realized how far and fast it traveled the night before last.  3 dead so far and I would guess more to come.  I worked for the USFS way back in the late 60's at Berry Creek and we stayed in a little camp outside Bucks Lake.  It is all cinders now.   So many of my old haunts up and down the state are now just blackened timber.   The area of the Camp Fire is where I camped each spring for about 11 years.  I also used to camp at a blackpowder club out of Brown's Valley.   It burnt up last year.  I guess we are paying for the years of no fires.

Was clear this morning when jogging, cloudy.  Smoky now.  Just three of us in the 'hood now.  Judge said he thought we might get a mandatory evacuation Saturday.  I just need some time to pack stoves and put in the truck, have a list of what to bring as for "stuff".  Fire had little activity last night, but the Judge said windy come Sunday.

Part of the North Complex now, north section.  Map can be seen on inciweb.  Acreage is up some, but containment for this zone is 26%, up from 23%.  Tons of smoke still, air quality off the chart, over 500+.  Coughing some last night and this morning.
Quiet in the 'hood, only two of us in our houses now, a couple come during the day to check.  I noticed others who don't live on our private road seem to have left.

Don't head up thisaways! Smoke may not be as bad, but it's bad. I think we're already getting fire refugees from the west side of the state, as the traffic sucks and the store shelves are empty. It's worse than the panic back in March. I spent half a day waiting to get into the laundromat yesterday.

Most important: Pack your important documents in boxes, put them in your car or in a place where you can put them in the car within 5 minutes. everything else can be replaced.

On a related line, Somebody I know lives in heavily forested area, and he has a concrete "vault" about four feet wide, eight feet long and four feet underground with a funny looking homemade door with around ten inches of fiberglass batting where he says he will cram all his valuables in case of a forest fire, I thought he was nuts, but now I can see the reasoning behind it.
Can't sleep, squirrels will eat me....

If you need a Sun Flame Generator Model 100-107 ( for Sunflame lanterns models 105, 106, 107 and 110) give me a PM, I have close to 80 of those, 15 bucks each.

As far as fire safes go.  My brothers landlord had $30k in one.  The santa Rosa Fires in 2017 destroyed his house, and all of the contents of his safes.  Dont 100% rely On a fire safe to keep valuables safe.  Some things that insurance coverage wont help with.

Just remember those so called "Fire safes" have a specific rating for a defined time.

In the aftermath of the Oakland hills fires, they found the remnants of some of those.  The contents didn't survive.  Some in the Oakland hills fires had "much better"  "fire safes".  Those didn't make it either....

The may survive a single house fire where the FD swamps it down in an hour or less.  In a holocaust type fire they do nothing...

Used to have a customer who made a full range of safes here in NY. They were acquired by a competitor who promptly shipped production to Mexico.
The lower end safes have fire rated drywall in them. The higher end ones were concrete filled. If one person can easily move it it’s probably not gonna last too long.

Depending on which way the wind drifts we are getting a lot of smoke in Reno with visibility at about 2 miles.  It bothers me a bit due to sinus problems but that's minor to what so many face with flames in sight.  Few fond memories of 2020 will survive.

Duane,  trying to stay in one room with  a good HEPA air purifier would probably be best - might need a room A/C unit as well (some have a filter, not sure how good...)

A root cellar might be a death trap if fire actually came through?

I'm now wishing I'd ordered a room air purifier!  I'm feeling the effects a bit of the constant smoke levels, and yesterday work a dust mask for half the day...
