I found a nice 228E (1953) lantern yesterday.  It had the metal "safe" ring on the bottom.
I opened that up and found the silk mantles, new gen and wrench in there.
The fuel knob was stuck as was the generator lever.  But I took a chance on it.
Put some oil and PB blaster on the valve and gen. About an hour later the gen lever
started to move. Finally after a few hours I put the wheel back on and it opened right up--
didn't use heat.  I emptied the tank, put in new fuel and got it RUNNING.

I oiled up the leather in the pump--it was a bit dry.

It got dim after 5 minutes. It had a new style cap on it.  The washer was toast.
Put a good cap on and it is now a solid runner.  It had a new style cap, but I found
a green one, and I put a new insert with washer in that one, and now it looks right.

Here's the running shot!! Will test drive it more tonight.

Nice one. You don't '53 220E's in that beautiful condition very often.

Looking for 6-56 and 6-58 Birthday lanterns.
There's been an alarming increase in the number of things I know nothing about.

Yeah, I figured a new gen is worth a few $$, and those silk lite mantles are worth something.
That meant I got the lantern for not too much.  Glad it came back to life without a lot of hassle.
Most of these have the big vent; this one is normal.  It is flawless and that's hard to find.

67 years old, looks and works as good as the day it left Wichita.  Nice find.
