Quick question.

Has anyone had any luck with the brand American mantels? I looked up an old thread but it is 5yrs old now.  A local hardware store/lumber yard sells them near me and I was wondering if they are any good. I almost picked up a pack to see, price didn't seem to bad. They resemble the Coleman coarse weave mantels.  Thanks for the input.

I haven't used them, but if they're really old, they just might be thorium and very bright.  I suggest picking up a pack and deciding for yourself.  Some folks don't like Coleman mantles, but most don't have issues with them.   I don't understand the difference, but have no issues myself, and am glad I stocked up when they were on clearance a couple of years ago.

Flammable liquids, open flame, what could go wrong?

I've missed you!  But I'm reloading.

I've had good luck with them, be aware that they don't burn very white, but more of a peachy color like low pressure sodium lights.

I’ve never used any, but I would definitely try them if I came across some.  Does it say where they are made?

I wish Coleman still did the coarse weave. I like the look and it might improve the light output with the new formula.

Yeah I’m going to get a pack and try them out. I’ll probably stop after work today.

I find that most packs of American mantles #785 150 CP have two different length mantles. I never remember to match them by opening two packs at once. It is obvious before you burn them in and can be more apparent once they are burned in.
One other complaint is the strings are not always strong and probably 1 out of 5 the strings break when I am tying them on.
I find we enough pressure they are white enough burning for my use but I have moved on to Peerless from OCP.
Thank you!
Kevin
I frighten easily!

I use american mantle 8003 on all my singles. They are a great coarse weave 300cp. That price is no bargain if the sticker is correct. I've never considered a 150cp for any of my lanterns but maybe I should give it a try.

The verdict.

Last night I set up two of my 288's. One with the American Mantels ( 2/87 ) and the other with Coleman 21a mantles ( 11/92 ) Both lanterns were running CF and were pumped up with 30 strokes.

American mantles on the left defiantly look longer than the 21A's .

The American mantles did flare up more than the Coleman 21's giving a pretty interesting show of fire. After burning them in they seem to shrink up to the same size.
IMG_4705.jpg
Its starting to get dark and there is a threat of rain coming so I better get lighting..
IMG_4708.jpg
The American mantles are burning nice and bright along side the Coleman 21a. After running for a few minutes I gave each lantern five more pumps. They are a touch yellow than the Coleman 21a. I know it is though to see but they even puffed up nicer than the 21's. like a nice pillow of ash and fire. Well it's now starting to rain and getting harder so I moved my operation into the garage for a bit.
IMG_4711.jpg
Here the Coleman 21's are on the left, I throttled them down to about half way each and they both still burned nicely. All in all i'm pretty impurest with the American Mantel brand. If in a pinch I would defiantly use them. I bought the last three packs the store had and if they get more in I'll pick up a couple more. Thanks everyone for all your feedback and I hope my little experiment helps the next one.

American Mantle co. are the same outfit that makes Peerless now. I'm on the fence about the mantles themselves. What they also make, that I like so far, is unmarked globes. Cheaper than the MIC Coleman globes and can also be used on off-brands.
