Do you find yourself obtaining lanterns then just can not see yourself getting rid of any?  I had a couple of coleman lanterns around 10 years ago.  I gave them both away.  I just couldn't get over it so I bought two that were similar to the ones I gave away.  I now have 5 and want a few more different ones.  I wish that I had seen the 2016 national parks led edition when it came out but I missed it.  Why doesn't coleman make a led version that is metal?  I think they would sell.  I suppose I am addicted.

I also have 3 aladdin lamps.  One is a 1935 white moonstone florentine vase lamp that my aunt had in Pulaski VA.  It is my favorite.

Nah. I've been very good about this and have kept myself down to only about 50.. or maybe 60.

I think I need to sell some more....

I almost exclusively buy "in the wild" as I'm a cheap barstid. I've also gotten a lot more discriminating over the years. Between those two, it really helps keep 'em down to a more or less manageable number. More or less--I brought home a new (to me) CQ lamp last night and do to do a major re-shuffle to make room for it in the cabin.

I am definitely addicted but with 12 lanterns and only 9 or 10 stoves. I am still at user quantities and can’t be charged as a dealer. Funny you mentioned Pulaski VA I live about 30 miles from there I need to see how the GPA situation is over there soon.

Hmm, can't count that high and even have my toes exposed.   Really have lost count but they come and go.  Some will always stay.

I got lucky and got the LED NPS to give to Lita for her Birthday this year from a forum member.  She was tickled and has it in her office.

I haven't bought a lantern for at least a year, but that was a great deal on a British kero lantern.
I was just at a gathering this weekend where there were lots of lanterns for sale; I passed them right by. (Had plenty of money, but no interest.)

I think REI was getting $150 for them.  That's a lot for an LED lantern.  The price dropped when it finally went on clearance, but I thought
$75 was still too high.  Had they kept the fount color originally planned, I think it would have helped sales a lot.

Wow, I really have no idea how many there are, I know about 100 or so in the house. Just sold 86 stoves in one lot late last fall and that didn't make as big of a dent in the pile as you may think. Going to do it again soon.

50 is also my magic number, give or take.  Nothing special or even arbitrary about it, but it seems to be my carrying capacity at home.  I too am "cheap" and discriminating, and am definitely not in the "no lantern left behind camp". Only place where I get into trouble is when I see a common model, or duplicate of what I already have, with a desirable accessory or some other goodies bundled with it.  Fortunately I have been able to fairly easily sell off my surplus.

IMG_20200615_154913_copy_800x600.jpg I just started collecting in October. I've not personally counted in awhile but someone was back there a couple weeks ago and said 60 something lanterns. Not counting lamps and stoves. I've also recently sold several duplicates not too mention the ten or so common 220s I give away for Christmas and other gifts... So I'd say yes it's addicting. ðŸ˜

As far as how many, that's an interesting question. Mayhap I should count some time??

In interest of full disclosure while I've never sold a GPA I have disposed of a few as gifts.

You all that find these lanterns in the wild are fortunate.  There's not much in the wild to hunt around here.  Jim you say you all like wick lamps too; does that include dietz?  I have two little wizards - one from my grandad that used it to watch tobacco barns at night when the tobacco was curing.  They used wood to fire the barns.  I have one winged wheel 350 that I got at a Halloween party when I was around 7 or 8 years old.

My sediments Exactly.  My Collecting anything (GPA’s, camp gear, axes, guns, etc.) doesn’t take food out of anyone’s mouth.  I like the hunt as much as the fettle.  I like a 220 as much as a rare lantern if it has a back story.

Jonathan,

Yes, Dietz and other wickies.  As Toby stated, Wednesday's are a good day to show whatever wickies you have.  You can search for prior threads entitled Wickie Wednesday.  Having any lanterns with family history are an added bonus!

If you ever decide to fire to fire up an Aladdin, you may very well get spoiled.  They provide a very soothing light.  Just don't go for maximum brightness or turn your back on them.  Rayo style lamps with the larger diameter round wicks and no mantle are also incredibly beautiful.

It takes patience, but you can find stuff in the wild.  i.e. Yard sales, estate sales, antique/consignment shops, etc.  For estate sales, I subscribe to estatesales.net and get daily notifications of the next day's sales.  I look through the pics to decide if any warrant showing up.  Yard sales are hit or miss, but still worth checking out.

as soon as I read your post about the tobacco barns I said to myself “I bet he’s in North Carolina.” I’m also in NC and got into lanterns about a year and a half ago. I try to only keep 60-70 but I’ve probably sold around 30 since then.

It truly is a very addictive hobby. I have well over 500 lanterns. Then we get to the lamps, stoves, Heaters, and irons. It never ends. There are so many variations of everything, that you seem to never know all there is to know about any particular model.
